The Birthday Trip

My birthday was coming up in 3 weeks. I’m not a big B-Day person and have forgotten it at least 2 years. Every couple of years my B-Day falls on Father’s Day as it did this year. I thought it would be nice to spend my B-Day in JA. I also thought it would be cool to be in the Caribbean on Father’s Day.

I happened to pm a member to see if we could link up when I get on the island. Well let me tell you that’s when blessing number 1 happened. She told me that I could rent out the bottom of her house up in the hills.


Every trip when I visit the country, I’m always told that I should be staying out there. I was excited that it was going to happen.

I arrived on a Friday and I would be on the island for 10 days. That’s a blessing in itself and my longest trip yet.</span></span>

I’ve read a lot about how the experience of traveling alone can be an enriching experience especially when you are a woman. It so funny how until I started writing this report that I thought that I had really never traveled alone. Really, I did when I took the Mess to JA. I had to be responsible for everything and I did it with a kid along. I wish I had remembered this because those small fears I had about it would have disappeared.

Before the flight I brought 2 mags. I’m addicted to Sudoku. I do a couple of puzzles everyday. I just stopped myself from buying one of the machines with 1000 puzzles in it. Anyway, when I get on the plane, I’m sitting next to an African-American female around my age and her younger nephew. I start to pick up my O mag and realize I can’t really focus on it. I offer it to my seat mates. Well that just started the convo rolling. She was a straight Jamaicaholic and she was taking her nephew to JA for the first time. We both predicted that he would be back. It was a great conversation. They were both so nice. It made me smile inside and helped wash away any doubts I had about how I would be able to manage going it alone. All I had to do was be nice and look what happened. We made plans to link up later in the week. It didn’t happen. It was hard for me to get out them hills. I would get stuck. By the time I did make it down, I went over to their beach and didn’t see them. Oh well, that area became my new hangout spot.

<span style="font-size: 11pt"><span style="font-family: 'Comic Sans MS'">Arriving was an adventure. One of my drivers picked me up and then we went to eat at a place where all the drivers go. It was a nice cafeteria and a nice way to start off the trip. The driver also had to pick up another couple in about an hour. I always over pack and had to pull out my extra bag from my luggage (yeah I always carry one to avoid paying the overweight fee-nice tip) to avoid the too heavy fee. So my luggage was taking up more than half his trunk. He decided that he would speed the way to Negril. I was in the car laughing it up. Watching all the familiar sites. Smiling at the places that I’ve stopped at. Screaming out peace to Bigga and mad that I couldn’t get some soup. On the way there, my driver spots his friend. He decides to honk at him to get his attention. He hopes that his friend can take me to Negril and so he can double back and head to the airport. His friend hears the honking, the yelling, and the waving of hands and ZOOMS off. I mean ZOOMS. Now you see him, now you don’t. We are in the car dying laughing at how he was gone, I mean you couldn’t see him at-tall.

<span style="font-size: 11pt"><span style="font-family: 'Comic Sans MS'">We catch up with him near a traffic jam. My friend is dogging in and out of traffic trying to catch up in the line to him. The police pull him over, but he is able to get his friend’s attention. I change cars and the police let my friend go. I ride the rest of the way with the new driver. He was nice to me. I called the owner of the house so that we could get directions. On the way it was very overcast. The driver and me were wishing the rain away so that he didn’t lose his money on a trip that he had booked for the afternoon. After a while it was evident that it was gonna rain. So I hoped that it would rain just long enough to refresh the area and so that he could still make his money. On the way to the house we stopped in Red River while it was raining. It reminded me of a cousin’s house back in Guyana where the ground is red like clay. I believe over there it is due to the bauxite. Not sure what causes the red out here. Well, because of the rain, we were driving through a literal red river. It was cool to sit out in the car and watch the water rush down the street. We later stopped at a little side shop, and I picked up a little bit of supplies. Then I called the owner again to get directions.

I can't really go in order b/c things in this trip just kinda all meshed together. So I hope you'll enjoy the ride with me.
