Everyone I have met calls it the Ethiopian apple, I have questioned the name on several occaisions. But then the person telling me this has more then one name as well, guess that's the way it goes in Jamaica. Cher, show the picture to Barry G, he's from country, see what he has to say about it.

All the Jamaicans that I know call it ethiopi apple and say it comes from Ethiopia.....but many plants & fruits have different names in Ja. than what I know them as....like, it took me a long time to figure out what "pranganut" was...pomegranite!

Stormney...neva made the jam...that was just part of the description of the fruit from my source...does sound good though. When my son was little, he used to LOVE those apples like hot bread, along with fried sprat!...those are some of the things he remembers about staying in Ja.Comment

Every morning I would awaken early simply to get a chance to inhale the beautiful mountain air...have my fruits...catch up on several novels written by local folks I know...read the newspaper...wait for the call, "Mrs. Shandra...breakfast is ready"... ...eat...and then plan what's for lunch.

June Plum juice
Codfish and cabbage
Roast breadfruit
Veggies
Johnny cakes
Boiled green bananas
Plantain
Avocado slices
Mint tea
...and mi wax everyting...

Curried mutton
Rice and peas
Tomato
Cucumber
Plantain
Blue Mountain coffee (<span style="font-size: 8pt">mi noh even drink coffee...but mi deh home)</span>

local lore dat. it's otaheiti apple as you say, but some people pronounced it "eetioti", and then from that it get to ethiopi.

Most Jamaicans just call it apple,but they are taight the proper name in school,but simply mispronounce it and then make it worst by trying to justify theor error. If yoy want to kniw th ename ask a teacher,ad explain what you just post. they you will both have a big belly laugh.
Jamaicans misproinounce many things,and that is how th enames come to vary from place to place.
Just ask about FLIM (film)and cerfitiket (certificate), it is just that way with many words.
That is why many people do not realize that patois is really mostly mis-pronounced english words..
Somewhat like how my postings are.

I didn't even know that Lychee was indigenous to Jamaica. Shandra I printed this off and cannot stop staring at it. I looooooooovvve Lychee as much as I love oxtail if that is even possible and is the first am even seeing a picture of a lychee tree...mebbe one day will see the live tree.
