Re: Here it is... JA holiday tripic rep
What do you get when you have someone who was raised in the 'hood on a first time trip to Jamaica? He was loving the view. Stunned at how people, including small children were "just walking" on the roads, along with goats and dogs. Kept seeing the 'same dog' at every corner. LOL! Mortified at how fast everyone drove... including myself. I had to keep checking that I was not going over the speed limit. I had plans to stop at Sharon's on her invite for dinner.... she was preparing gungo peas soup and curried goat. By the time we got into Ocho Rios it was dark. By then T was becoming frantic. You know how Jamaican motorists love to blind you with their bright lights? Well, it was killing him and me too and he kept jumping each time he saw someone walking on the edge of the road. He was tired. I was tired of him frightening me. I kept telling him to relax. It was dark out.. with not much street lights. And after a while... I thought he was going to go ballistics when the street markings disappeared. I started thinking "Oh my god Sandi... is this what it is going to be like??!!!" He was getting on my right nerves and I was not helping the situation either because I'm one of those motorists who talks and drive and even though I look *way* ahead... the passenger may not know it. We were almost at each others throat. I had to call Sharon and told her we could not make it and will stop on the way when we are to head into Negril. No problem, Sandi. Just be safe and drive carefully, a nuff mad people out dey.
I realised I was not helping him each time I said "We're almost there.... another hour." What should've been a 3 1/2 hr drive took exactly 5 hours. The last hour of the drive we were in stone silence, with him gripping the dashboard. I deliberately decided to not say another word to him and I deliberately drove faster in some areas but more to gain time to get us into San San. Finally! We were there! T apologised for his behaviour and I told him to just be aware that this is what he is to expect where the roads and the driving is concerned... but expect more, as Jamaica is a land of many surprises. It was close to 11pm and though we were tired but not tired enough to sleep.... we spent the night on the balcony just staring at the next surprise.... the night sky was filled with stars. Awesome! I started laying out the plans for the days ahead.....
