Dancehall legend Bounty Killer was in Negril Tuesday night, performing at Jungle nightclub packed with Springbreakers.
The performance was in aid of Soul Rebellion's "Buy a Brick" charity campaign that raises money to build schools and libraries in Jamaica.
"With Bounty being the Poor People's Governor he was a natural choice to help us with the campaign," said Richard Sloan, head of Soul Rebellion. "It was a great success and our aim is to buy thousands of books and computers for schools in Jamaica and Bounty lending his support has given us a tremendous lift."
The "Buy a Brick" campaign targets Springbreakers, encouraging them to contribute to Jamaica during their visit here, not just come to Jamaica party and leave.
"I am always an advocate for a positive movement in my country," said Bounty. "I always try and make myself available to help such causes and this was an honour to be a part of as it helps Jamaican kids directly. Soul Rebellion are doing a great job as there is always a gap between the needs of the people and what Government provides and they are helping to bridge that gap."
A film crew from BET were also in attendance, shooting a documentary on the project.

so...where were we...
It's time to head back to Traveller's. The sound issues should be getting squared away, a quick reprise of equipment needs with the band and I'm settled that we have this.
One year we had a band called, I kid you not, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad. They were insanely talented and incredible performers. But part of their sound came from the instruments they used, rare Hammond organs and things like that, so to meet the requirements of their rider was problematic and they had to make do with substitutes. Some artistes will not roll with punches like that, and will refuse to perform. I can undertsand that, although it does sometimes get slightly ridiculous.
Rootz Underground being a live band, and the rider coming in so close to show time, made me a little nervous, but after the briefing, everything was cool.
I am considering the promotion, I'm confident we will gain a crowd against the typical and generic spring break party that is up against us...and as the evening progresses into gates open, we get a steady roll- we're not swamped, but we're doing decent all things considered. Rootz is still practically an unkown, despite having been on some of the biggest stages. I had wanted to go seriously guerilla in the lead up to the show, but time is the enemy and the documentary just took up too much. Plus, coming down the pipe, I had a Shaolin visit to arrange and set up. More history being made.
But I'm getting ahead of myself.
First, we have round two of the daytime segment.
Mr. Wellington of Travellers and NEET, opens the segment.
Very interesting story behind Mr. Wellington, not least of which are the times he literally blocked bridges into Manhattan to redress wrongs against his community of taxi drivers. The first cars they abandoned the police would come and tow off. So they got it to where they could remove the wheels very quickly.

Considering her first time ever on stage or performing she opened for Bounty Killer, she got her chops really quick. I imagine many many hours spent imagining herself and visualizing these moments proved beneficial lol.

not too sure- usually there is something going on, but shows right now are rough man...most of them are financial bloodbaths.
but just check the street signs and posters, usually there are some shows with some old school crooners at some of the beach venues if there is nothing bigger in town.Comment

After some students run through some spoken word and some poetry and song, we get ready to welcome a very unique ensemble of guests, members of various Rasta communities have decided to come together and participate.
As mentioned this is kind of unique to see all these different representatives trod out and come together for a session. There was word that Crocus bag Bredren and also Reed Bredren were going to come, but there seemed to be an issue as to finding them. These Ras are named so because one only wears what he can make out of crocus bags, and the next one is the same he only wears what he can fashion out of reeds and grass, neither have lived under a roof since anyone who knows them can remember.
Next year.

Sometimes he cooks food on the road, and he is pretty good at it too.
So he can feed more than the mind or spirit.

It's a really positive venture that you have going. The pictures and the narrative make me feel part of the atmosphere. Wow, and to see and hear about the logistical goings ons is priceless. Didn't buy my blocks the last trip, wasn't exactly sure how to do that, now I know. So, the next trip I will buy bricks and also make up for the ones I didn't buy before

So eventually, the day time segment winds down, the kids finish strong with the National Anthem.
Gem swings through to pay some respects.
Miss Sonia is off to the kitchen- I say kitchen, but it is really more like a lean to, the woman loves to cook outdoors over a wood fire. She's had countless offers from people to put her in a kitchen and build her a restaurant, but she won't go inside. Old time cooking is what she calls it, she's described it to me a few times but I always forget the word she uses to describe the technique.
Well she is prepping now because I am bringing everyone associated with SR over for a family style meal- we'll be coming in two phases. I am trying to not be at the sound check. I'm done with being a chief for this part of the day. Besides, outside of being a DJ, I don't know [censored] about sound for a band, I don't need to hold anyone's hand they have a stage plot where everything is supposed to go. I just want to enjoy my meal and not have to squash mountains back into mole hills.
As sound check ends the guys from Rootz start to trickle over, plus the BET guys are finishing up. Everyone devours the dinner, Miss Sonia had about a dozen shop vacs come through the spot for this meal lol. I don't know where the hell she even got all those pots. Curried chicken, curried lobster, white rice, rice and peas, fried chicken, brown stew beef, roast fish, fried fish, roti, all kinds of veggies...so even the vegetarians were well satisfied, she had made a tomato cucumber relish kind of thing that reminded me a little of chow from trinidad, but not with that much kick, still, about 3 bowls of it disappeared. No shots of dinner, everyone was too busy eating. One of the staff members picked up a piece of fried chicken, took a bite, and was like, Oh...My...God...this is the best piece of fried chicken I ever ate.
Her claim grew in stature when she revealed where she was from, someplace in Georgia I think. Anyway, I didn't need her to tell me lol, I ate a whole bird just on my own.Comment

It's show time. Down the street is Mardi Gras, lol. Soul Rebellion has the big companies so scared that every year rather than just join us they manipulate, they threaten, they try and capture then rip off all the kids they can, trying to force them to buy these party bands and go through their grubby program, they jump up and down, dive through hoops- so this year they moved their best party up against us, which if the best is Mardi Gras that is not saying much lol. It's asinine, but that is their mentality. I guess once again they thought they would flop us.
However, our goal in this was never to steal the biggest crowd. Our goal was to get exposure to the brick program. We flopped them last year anyway and gassed out their partners. Whom I feel bad for. Shaggy's show last year was brutally mispromoted and mismanaged.
Anyway, first up, Nellie:

This was her first show, and Rootz was her second. I mean, I don't know what to say except people need to watch the hell out for her.
