Still checking out the house's main floor. This was where the family and guests would wash their hands, with the water coming from the copper container above the bucket.

This bucket was incredibly heavy, but the kids of the slaves had to carry water in it for household needs. If they spilled the water, they would be flogged and of course, had to go back and do it all over again.

Quite spacious common area outside the bedrooms that provided a lovely view of the large backyard and beyond.

This speaks for itself! A sort of commode - pity the house slaves that had to clean that thing!

Husband #2 "bit the dust" here. Funny how she didn't kill them all in the same room.

Thanks Jazz, and good to see you You are right, the kids are the stars and I will not forget them anytime soon either. I'm still missing them like crazy

Annie's third husband met the same fate as the first two. It is said that she was a "gold digger"; marrying the men for the money and prestige them bumping them off. Of course, her preferred lovers were some of her slaves.

It is said that Annie sometimes slept here. Yeah, she was short - standing less than 5 feet.

Very sunny day; sorry about the glare. I LOVE the spaciousness of the bedroom.

In the guest room. They usually allow people to stay here, but supposedly one couple was drinking tea and had moved out of the dining area when they heard the cups smashing against the floor. Of course, they blamed it on the ghost of Annie who allegedly still roams the property.

This was in the hallway

Steps leading down to the dungeon. Annie had two jail cells there in which she kept slaves who were captured after attempting to runaway. She actually had bear traps laid all over the property and the slaves who were captured were usually the ones caught in them. They would receive no medical care and would be left in the dungeon to die. The cells then are now the male and female washrooms for staff and tour guests.

Of course, the exit from the dungeon was through the gift shop and restaurant. This is outside.

Next stop - Annie's tomb and the interesting story sorrounding that...

Annie's tomb. Now, there is a cross on three of the four sides and the story is that as Annie's spirit roamed the grounds, some people came from Haiti and professed to be able to communicate with her. The idea being that they would entice her to go into her grave, after which they would paint four crosses - one per side - to keep her in (spirits supposedly can't go pass the cross). Well, Annie outsmarted them because according to the legend, they did communicate with her for a while but then the communication died (no pun intended). They tried everything they could but Annie didn't "say" another word, and they had no idea if she was in the grave or not. If she wasn't in there and they painted four crosses, she wouldn't be able to go back in, so they ended up painting only three. If she was out, she could go back in but of course if she was in, she could come back out. Even in death, the woman was smart Her ghost is said to still haunt the plantation and the house.

Visiting the Guest House had been an amazing experience. So much history and intrigue. There really isn't anything new under the sun; Annie loved and killed before she herself was killed by one of her slave lovers. If it wasn't so serious, it would make a great script for a soap opera. We left the guest house and Mark decided we would go back a different route to St. Bess. The sun was mercilessly hot so I didn't mind if we only stopped here and there for whatever the group deemed interesting. We were tired though, and this drive was somewhat anti-climatic. Still I enjoyed the ride and the beauty of our piece of earth.

Heat and hunger - a dangerous combination, so it was a stop at a on-the-beach restaurant called Flavors.

The menu looked promising. Average price of a meal was about J$400 and spoiled by the Jamaican-Chinese restaurant at Top Hill, I opted for chicken chop suey. Major disaster! The food took forever to get done and when it arrived, think of over done chop suey with fried chicken thrown in on top like croutons! Too bad, because it is a great location on the beach but not a place I'll be thinking of for food on future visits.

A quick stop in the market at Brown's Town. It was my first time in this area, and boy, was it (the market and roadways) ever congested. This lady is a member of the church at Tryall.

Across the street a couple of us hopped into a store to buy phone credits. In the store the guy behind the counter gladly took a team member's cash and promptly handed her the receipt with the code. Not being familiar with how to reload her phone, she asked him for assistance and he refused, telling her it was easy to do. After some going back and forth on his need to learn how to treat customers, it turned out the guy had no idea how to add the credits either \0/ Jamaicans are super-friendly though, and a young lady in store promptly offered to do them all. She was a pro at it - in "two shakes of a ducks tail" we were on our way. By this time we simply wanted to get back to our hotel.

Thanks, Marilyn. I would definintely recommend the Rose Hall tour as it is really is quite fascinating (the stories too). As mentioned in the report, I too thought it would have been a tad errie but it really wasn't. I have to admit though that some have claimed that when they developed pictures taken at the house, they "see" strange things in them. Some of these pictures are on display in the dungeon, but in looking at them I didn't see anything odd. A friend of mine swore (well, not really but she was 100% convinced) there was a ghoulish image of Annie in one of hers, but I am inclined to believe that it is more the mind playing tricks on anything faintly abstract

As for the above pic, I was hesitant to take it but she insisted and I'm glad I did. It is a wonderful picture and one I really like.
