Some friends have a great band called Toubab Krewe - they went to Mali to study and they play West African instruments. never knew the origin of the name!

OMG!! Thank you for that link - the music is beautiful and so Malian!! (I travelled around there, met the father of my child there etc.).

They must've had an amazing time in Mali with the musicians. Musicians from Europe do it too.
There's two good music festivals there, Festival of the Desert in Timbuctoo and Segou Festival. December and February each year.

If you are into that kind of music, check out Toumani Diabete's Symmetric Orchestra, there's so much good Malian music (and Senegal too), Oumou Sangare, Ami Koita, Salif Keita, etc.
I have a thread on the music videos thread, think the title is Vivianne (N'Dour, Youssouf N'Dour's sister in law), some great videos on there. Diamond Fingers - Sekou Diabate - another amazing musician from Guinee, like Yaya Bangoura

But Legends has a sister hotel, Samsara, on the cliffs and you could go there by shuttle, so I did one day (but walked back to the internet caf instead of waiting for the return shuttle). Anyway, Samsara is very nice the way it is located and the lay-out, but I would feel stuck there if staying - well, you can walk to Ricks but 1 night of that is enough for me - and the atmosphere at Legends was better, more friendly and relaxed, both guests and staff.

Love those cabanas on stilts, but not sure if they are guest rooms or whatever...



this is looking the other way, they had 2 pools, and one is great, with double beds lying next to them with canopies against the sun, very cosy, and the pool itself is shallow with loungers in it, so you can lie on a lounger in the pool
