Vi...we've been to Negril before, this will be our 20th trip there. No ifs, ands, or buts...

The ladies are moving to Catch A Falling Star today. Spending their last day and night in different luxurious surroundings. While they are transferring and getting settled, I spend my morning and afternoon tagging along with a friend to run a few errands. One of my favorite things to do when I’m in Jamaica.

Looking back, I clearly remember the people simply “living” the moment. It’s times like these when I get so far away from the tourist element that I’m feeling like I’m home, but with a new background. Routine taking care of business on a hot summer’s day while making plans for the next. No camera for times like this. Just eyes and ears to take it all in for personal reflections.

Standing outside the store, a little girl about 4 is waiting with her mother. She dances round like little girls do until she notices me. I became the object of her curiosity. I didn’t want to stare at her staring at me, but she is just too darn cute. Little pink slacks with a white belt around her waist. The pink and white short sleeved top came down right above the belt line. Each time she raised her arms, her little belly button would peek out. Hundreds of assorted pink and white barrettes that decorated the ends of her braided hair clicked as she tossed her head.

She inches towards me. Doesn’t say anything, just stares. I smile. She doesn’t smile back, but she doesn’t run off either.

“I like your hair. It is so pretty.”

A surprised look flash across her face, then a slight smile. Her mother, like any attentive mother, heard what I said and told her to thank me. She didn’t, but continued to stare and rock her upper body from side to side.

A slight breeze passed between us.

“Oh my, that felt good. It’s hot out here isn’t it sweetie?”

Again, that amazed look returned to her tiny face. Then a giggle. This time she snuggled up next to her mother, burying her face on her thigh.

“mummeee…mummeee….mummeeeeeeeeee”

He mother stoops down to listen. She smiles and turns to me. “She like you talk.”

“My talk?? My voice?? Oh my accent.” I must have sounded funny to her. No matter what I said or asked her after that, she would not answer just stood and listened.

What an innocent way of reminding me I’m not home and I must leave soon.

It was time for us to go. I get in the ride, look out the window and she’s watching me. I wave. She waves. [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif[/img]

“You hungry, Vi?”
“No. I’m going back and try to catch the sunset.”
“No soup?”
“No. Not right now.”

I rushed to my room to drop off and grab up then head to the beach. Almost four pm. Two or less hours before sunset.

The beach has thinned. I can clearly see endless turquoise waters straight ahead, to the left and to the right without having to look pass, around or through sunbathing obstructions. Nothing blocking my view. I can even hear her sing.

I picked up my cd player, slip in Maxi, but even he agrees, you’ve got the Caribbean, real comfort. True comfort. No music right now. I remove the headphones, sit and wait. Wait for the setting sun so I can make a wish right before it descends. I look up, it’s still early.

I soon drift off in a lite sleep.

“Excuse me miss…miss, excuse me.”

Am I still sleep…where am I? I turn, straighten my clothes proper then focus on the face that is speaking to me.

“Miss, you alright? You asleep long time.”

I looked at my watch. I wasn’t sleep for a long time. Beach security. He wants to talk. I see the sun is minutes away from kissing my day goodnight. I shifted in the lounge one more time before turning to him and smiling while I reach for my camera. This moment is for me.

I listen to him as I watch the sunset. It was a gift. Even as I took picture after picture, my security friend talked above the clicking. When he was finished, the sun disappeared behind the watery horizon.



“Baby, I have to go.” As I stood, gathering my things. “What’s your name dahlin?” I asked as I slipped the camera into the case, then into my bag, soon over my shoulder. We chat for a few more minutes before I made my way to the room.

I’m excited because after showering, I’ll make my way to Catch a Falling Star to dine with my sistafriends. Maxi keeps me company all the way.

I stand by the road to wait for a driver to come by. My stomach is queasy, I just want to get there. Driver one. No thank you. Driver two comes and stop. No thank you. Drive three. “Going to CAFT…how much?”

“Ten dollas US.”
“Too much.”
“Six dolla US.”
“Okay. I get in, we take off.”

I chose him because he looks quiet and I just wanted to ride in silence…save my chat for Sammy and Mokatee. It’s their last night. I feel sick they are leaving. Not leaving me…Leaving Jamaica who is going to miss them just as much as I will. Lawd knows.

The man talked from before he put the car into drive. This is what, a 12 maybe 15 minute ride with no traffic. I can do this. I rubbed my stomach and inhaled the cool AC. I preferred having the window down, but this felt better for now.

I must have been answering him because he was still talking. It felt like we were riding forever. I glance out the window to see a man on a bicycle passing us. WHAT THE,,,

I look at his speed.

“Suh, you noh tell me a who you go to meet at Catch a Falling Star. You meeting you man?”

“Are you driving in reverse???”

He didn’t answer. He floored it. I kept my shut and prayed.

We get to CAFS and he drives pass the first gate. I still didn’t say anything. He pulls close to the second gate. I pay him, but tell him I don’t think this is the right gate. He tells me to get out and knock on the double doors that are secured by a huge chain and lock. HUGE. I knocked. Nothing. I knock again. Nothing. I turn around, driver gone. I walk down to the next gate which was closed, but had no chain or lock pon it. I knock. Wayne, Security welcomes me in immediately. He’s a sweetheart. A big teddy bear with a voice. Vocal pipes which he knew how to use. We chat for a few. I look towards the darkness and remember my sistas.

After excusing myself, I head down the arched path. I don’t know where I’m going. I call the room. “I’m here, how do I get to you?” Sammy comes out to meet me. [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif[/img]
