But anyway, back to the story....
After the mind-numbing Capitol tour, I needed a beer....and in our continuing attempt to visit some of DC's neighborhoods, we decided to stay on Capitol Hill...while the Hill is best known for it's connection to the Government, it's also a living, breathing neighborhood....residences, schools, parks, and, oh yeah, bars
The Library of Congress.....locals told me that the LOC is the best museum in town; unfortunately, we didn't have time, so this is on our list of things to do next time...

Eventually we found ourselves at the Tune Inn, a place that absolutely revels in it's reputation as a dive bar...that may be why we enjoyed the place so much
...Esquire magazine named it one of the best bars in the US, and why not?! cheap, cold beer, great burgers (try the mushroom&swiss 
), and an interesting group of regulars...we were probably the only tourists in the place, but the locals seemed genuinely interested in how our visit was going.....
in typical dive bar fashion, the decor was dominated by a collection of mounted animals on the walls (all dispatched by the owner, an avid hunter)....there was the usual assortment of deer, bears and birds, as well as not one, but <span style="font-weight: bold">two</span> jackalopes
...however, they had one thing I've never seen....hanging above the door to the men's room was...well, how can I put this delicately...imagine the south end of a northbound deer

The plan for Sunday was a leisurely brunch followed by a Major League Baseball game.....I figured it'd be nice to do something other than museums and monuments....
So Sunday morning, we took the Metro to the U Street/Shaw neighborhood, the home of Howard University and the historic heart of the city's African-American community, where name entertainers and black-owned businesses made U Street the place to be.
We did brunch at a place called Busboys & Poets.... the name refers to Langston Hughes, who worked as a busboy at the Wardman Park Hotel in the 1930s, prior to gaining recognition as a poet.....
It's much more than a restaurant, tho....
but the restaurant itself is really funky!! instead of the usual tables and chairs, the dining room was a bunch of sofas, easy chairs and coffee tables....as long as you order something, you're welcome to sit and chill, which is just what we did with our Sunday paper I ordered eggs, ham (<span style="font-weight: bold">not</span> from a Mexican pig 
), grits, toast and one of the best Bloody Marys I've ever had 
.....

Loving this trip report Dave. I was in Washington this past weekend and talk about walking. I had one day (Saturday)to show my sister something and we walked for 5 miles just looking and snapping pictures.
Washington is a beautiful place and I miss it so when I return from time to time. It's a rare place that loves history and maintains is old structure rather than destroy it to make room for the new.
Your pictures are beautiful and you showed me places that I have never visited even after living there 14 years. Thanks for posting and keeping us entertained until July.Comment

You never dissapoint. Great photos. I haven't been to DC in ages....and considering the residents of the past 8 years, I haven't had a burning desire to go either.
When I was growing up, we used to go every couple of years to see the cherry blossoms. Its been about 12 years since my last visit....I am long overdue.
BTW, eastern airlines...that brought back so many memories. They were my favorite airline back in the day. $49 r/t between NYC and Ft Lauderdale.

OK, lemme get back to this.....
Our plan for Sunday afternoon was to go see a game at the Washington National's new stadium....not because we wanted to see the Nationals (Washington - First in war, first in peace and last in the National League
), but the Cardinals were in town which means we would have gotten to see the great Albert Pujols, arguably the best player in the game today
However, Mother Nature was not the least bit interested in our plans.... the intermittent rain and mist we'd been dealing with since we arrived turned into a steady rain for most of the afternoon and the game was postponed....I'm glad we didn't buy tickets ahead of time ...
We stopped back at the hotel to work on an alternate plan and decided on the Museum of Natural History....during the summer months, the museum is open until 7:30PM, so we wandered over there a little after 5PM, only to learn that due to a "special event" the museum had closed for the day!
OK then, on to Plan C
The entrance to the Capitol tour is in the back of the building, so we figured we'd go take a walk around the front of the building (the rain had subsided somewhat by then)...

Like I said at the beginning, Inauguration Day was the inspiration for this trip...I was very proud that this Country finally seemed to be headed out of the darkness...and I was even prouder that after 8 long years, we once again have a President who can correctly pronounce the word "nuclear"
