I saw the following pic as a small child in a national geographic magazine and it has haunted me ever since I was finally able to visit the actual place and learn the history. Can you imagine getting shoved off the mountain like that.

<span style="font-style: italic">Kailua!!!</span> one of The Prettiest beaches, our favorite on sunday afternoons after house chores done... those two islands ina the distance are the Mokuleia's ('the Mokes' for short). we used to have huge parties out there.... carry over generators in the boats, set up tents for bands to play, eat and jam and dance all day

Nice report and pictures, love Hawaii you have to get away from the tourist area to really appreciate it.

There is a Japanesse Club about 2 miles from Diamond Head. Them play some wicked reagge music and great vibe.

Brown sand doesn't do it for me anywhere. Not even south coast of JA.

I'm with Pepper on this one. Waikiki beach is too crowded for me and it's rocky so yuh cyaan have a nice sea bath unless you a put one a wata shoes.

I liked the beaches in Kauai though, those were nice.
Still yaad edge out HI more time.

the better beaches are the non tourist ones - i realize the sand looks kinda brownish in the Kailua pics above, but in person it's not. there's also (my personal favorite in HI) <span style="font-weight: bold">Makua</span>; and Waimanalo and Waimea and, and, and, ..... i could go on and on - white white sand and deep blue water is the usual. is only Waikiki that has gotten dirty and brown.

another interesting note.... waikiki is a man-made beach - not natural. the waikiki area was a swampy marsh &amp; the entire neighborhood was created by landfill. one of the reasons it's so rocky is cause so much of the sand that had been hauled and filled in there, gets repeatedly denuded over the years. so from time to time they go in and add more sand.

the natural beaches around the island, even right on Oahu- are much much nicer....

my favorite beach was on Hawaii - the big island

it was a black sand beach with flecks of white and you could go nude found out about it via the Hidden Hawaii book - also found some REAL hawaiians living in homes that rival some of the worst i've ever seen in jamaica - most of the indigenious population is on welfare

if i won a trip to hawaii - i wouldn't go - too crowded, too commercial, too expensive,too far and i've been there more than once - to most of the islands including molaki

give me jamaica . . .

but still, if i <span style="font-style: italic">won</span> a trip to hawaii i'd go back for a visit with BELLS ON!

cause mi know all the good locals-only secret spots where it's uncrowded &amp; has the sweet vibes

Really interesting thread! Thanks for that! And for the music link, never knew they were into reggae, how blonde is that lol , EVERYONE is into reggae!!

I guess as a Jamaican travelling, when people find out where you are from you get much the same reaction as I do when I tell people I live in Amsterdam - (I usually get the coffee shop stories )
It's nice for an instant bonding moment!!

What attracts me to Hawaii is not only the natural vegetation (and what puts me off is the &quot;American Mall&quot; style tourism..),
also that it is a centre for natural healing, I would be interested in learning more about their Aloha philosophy, I see similarities to the rasta philosophy of One Love
