Serious thing. If you are wearing something small, my bet is you end up putting a sweater on before you go much further.

See fi mi name up above. There is a reason for it, I love the cold and ice and snow more than just about anything. (Ok so I'm not righted).

I've been waiting all winter for today's conditions. True, Winter only just started for most of you, but it has been here fast and furious for quite awhile already.

I will start with today's adventure!

What is -24 in Celsius? I'm too lazy to look after crawling around on ice all morning. At one point the temp was at -29, but I was on a 2 lane road with deep ditches and it was covered in a thick sheet of ice and snow covered. Logging trucks were coming from the other direction and it was a tense hour. There was no place to pull over to take a pic of -29.



The reward when I reached the waterfront where it was only -5, was this spectacular sea steam.



Ships were in the harbor coming in and going out. I never saw so many ships in such a short span of time I don't think. I only stuck around for a couple, my fingers are still sore, they got way colder than I should have let them but it was too exciting so I wasn't about to leave.

Nookie -24c is bout 11farenheit well for New year it was bout 6c which is bout 42farenheit. Nice pics!! just watch we ge t snow when am sick so cannot go skiing Careful of those trucks or any of those fourlegged critters, they dash out when you least expect it.

Hey Stormmey I think of you while traveling these northern roads and keep an eye out for Moose. One thing for sure, I almost always have my camera and ready, and I sure as hell don't want to see one hanging from my car roof!

...-24 F is -31 Celsius!

Let me back up a little bit, this was the first ship. It was leaving, probably loaded with iron ore. I haven't looked at the marine log yet.





Those were taken on the port side of the bridge so it was time to get a move on. It was slow going, the whole city is covered in ice right now from the new Years storm.

This is Duluth's Disney. It used to be all warehouses an a pizza/pizza roll factory. Now it is upscale galleries and restaurants and more hotels than you can shake a stick at. Quiet this time of year though.




There was barely a spot to park in the lot though. We take our ship watching seriously in these parts.

I shot this from inside my car on the street.




<span style="font-weight: bold">NOTE TO SELF</span>: tomorrow make sure cleats are in the car at all times! Ice, everthing is covered in ice.

While waiting for the next ship I was unpleasantly surprised to find out the marine museum and tourist information was CLOSED. It is only open on weekends during winter. I guess us local people don't matter!

Well, I did find entertainment that I might not have found otherwise but the tourist catering irks me.

The canal is ice covered



The many boulders on the shore breakwater are covered in ice but Lord, this is the most beautiful thing in the world to me next to Blue ice!





The incoming Algomarine seemed to be taking forever and my fingers were getting numb...



Ducks really don't care how cold it gets as long as they can eat I guess...

There are not righted either!

By this point I knew I was pushing it with my poor fingers. Shooting started to get difficult and I just had to go with auto mode because I could no longer control the settings.

I kept telling myself it was not as bad as it was, but it really was that bad I shouldn't have stayed out there...




It is worth it to stay out there though, even though my fingers are still hurting I plain don't care. I don't have pics of it because the ship was too close for my lens but one crew member was out there waving to us and yelling &quot;Happy New Year&quot;!

It was freeking awesome.

<span style="font-style: italic">(Note to Roots, I don't swim out to ships but I'll damn go out and wave to em passin by! </span> ) The rest of you reading, well...there's some fighting words...sayings like &quot;your mother swims out to ships&quot;, and so forth, taunting and funny at the same time... that us shore people use.

Welcome Peasie and Rootsie to my wonderland! I am over the top with glee over my Winter so far as far as snow and ice goes I am in HEAVEN!!!! (insert Oprah Winfrey style HEAVEN!!! here)

I have a bunch of stuff to do but I can't leave you all needing a jacket. I have pretty blue sky and fluffy white snow in 40F above too! I have been out a lot and don't see stopping anytime soon. <span style="font-weight: bold">Beargrease</span> is around the corner!

Last Fall I ran across this old snowplow. It was parked next to an equally old car and I was in photo heaven.

The car is buried but this is the truck:

Do you think it could plow it's way out of there if it was in running shape?





This sign is on the same road as the old plow truck. I always get a chuckle when I see it.

We have a boat thats called the *****at. ITs a boat/bar/supplys the frieghters while sitting out there in the summer. When you sit down for a beer on it, its a commitment. you may not come back to shore for an hour or more.
I'll grab a pic of it for you.

Interesting about the bum boats Roots. When I used to drive taxi I dropped sailors off at the local houses of ill repute. That was all they seemed to need but a few more clean cut ones went to the mall.

Marielle, that is funny you saw the pelican! I didn't see it until you mentioned it but there it is plain as day!

I love snow but I love ice more. I'm hoping for a blue ice event this year and if there is one I'll be there! Ice sheets need to form on the lake first, then a big wind to blow them to shore along with below zero.

For now I have to settle for this, but it is still pretty.





The kids dive off this old structure we call Uncle Harvey's Mausoleum in summer, but not now!

I love the snow simply for the winter sports.....skiing.....snomobile etc. I cannot take the ice

I am so glad B.C. does not get that cold that we get the ice. Careful of your fingers and the cold.....think when you get older can have serious consequences I am told.

Only hope this year some fool dont go skiing alone with tons of snow on some hill and the least little movement/disturbance can cause a landslide. Two years ago some guy was trapped by an avalance and his body still has not been found. Use to run with that crowd when I was a teen.

Good morning Stormmey, yes the frostbite can be very dangerous. I was long past the point of finger pain by the time I left and I know better. However, the opportunity was so fantastic i simply could not go scurrying to the car!
