...Lookin back,...I think I was sure (at the time those pics were taken) that I was going to go to hell for somethin....but I wasn't quite sure what. That's about all I could figure. ...and that last picture was taken in Sante Fe, near the main plaza where the Navaho Ladies were selling their jewelry on blankets and we didn't have time to stop....My thinking was that I would try to make as much as possible out of this drive to the airport, while keeping in mind that a storm was about to swallow us up whole...this short sidetrip turned out to be a mistake, resulting in a long explaination (another mistake) on why it would be better to come back another time soon and spend at least 3 days in Sante Fe if we wanted to "do it right". Arlo was grasping for straws!
...now while many here might think that long-winded nefarious diologues about this and that particulars tend to distract from the true purpose of a tale...I'm here to tell ya that nuthin succeeds like "patience"...so I hope ya all bear with me as I try to bring this here yarn to a proper conclusion, maybe. hopefully.
...at this point in the tale, Coastal dwellers might say that the tide had run out on Arlo....and everything was stinkin. Definitely hazardous to navigation...especially in uncharted waters. But...there are a few, a few that just might sieze the opportunity to dig clams...providin there are any. ...and ArloTurdYaMan,...well, he certainly could be one of these... You all are invited over for chowder....sometime, soon I hope! ...THAT, or STONE SOUP,...I'll bring the stone, you bring the carrots, and maybe someone else the potatoes...</font> on with the story:
LB, still driving, was looking to me for directions...having given up hope that anything worthwhile could come of the rest of the trip. I ...desperately searching the map looking for the easiest way out of Sante Fe, gave up and decided to just take the wheel and pray, for the rest of the trip. As luck would have it...we were on the proper freeway within 10 minutes.
LB read an exit sign as we passed it. "Turquoise Trail" south. I had told her how wonderful that road was, on our way to Santa Rosa. ...and I remembered how she still hadn't found the turquoise beads she was looking for...AAAArrrrg!
Fortunately there was another exit to the trail about 2 miles further on. I took it. There was a gas station there. I put 5 more gallons in. We had 2 1/2 hrs till we had to turn in the rental car...and this was a 2 lane mountain road filled with curves. I knew of a shop in an old town called Cerillos...and there was the hippy mecca called Madrid...we'd be cruising through both of them and something good could happen...
...We reached the shop in Cerillos...with time to spare...so far so good (just kiddin!)....this is one of the things you see outside...
Funny, after coming back here just now, I realize what seemed to happen here. All of a sudden I've been making turquoise and cinnimon and dark ivory colored beads today, Hmm... I hadn't realized till just now it prolly has something to do with your trip report!
Tdude, downing his second cup of coffee, takes a last drag on a cigarette, rubs his eyes, and after a long last look at the computer screen...begins the "hunt and peck" process...
Yea, well Nan, I'm thinkin that whatever yur workin on there will be "one dark piece"...considerin the way this tale is a goin... ...cuz, much like I'm fearin I'm losing my audience here now,....I was fearin I was losing my grip on this here relationship that I been tryin so hard to keep from unravelin...(sorry, not meanin to get this thread bumped into Dear K an John!) This here store, pictured below, was about the last chance I had for things to be complete, meanin like,...if my girl had some turquoise beads in her hand, ALL would be forgiven...we counted what money we had left...13 dollars...(visa doesn't work in this town)...and headed inside...
...once inside there, LB's eyes grew as big as saucers! I mean, this was like "THE Ben Franklin store" of Cerillos (in fact, the ONLY store in Cerillos, besides a tavern)...with just about everything you could imagine, spread throughout 2 rooms, in small boxes and bins. Pretty rocks, fossils, railroad spikes, bumper stickers, old glass electric insulators...you name it! I shot through the store ahead of my gal...desperately lookin this way and that for THE beads...and found a whole table devoted to beads!....every kinda bead cept turquoise ones...I wish I had a picture here to show you the inside of the store, but for obvious reasons I don't. Feelin kinda apprehentious, I headed out the door (while LB was still agog looking at all the pretty stuff)...to look at the scenery and pray...
...Well, I'd say about 15 minutes musta gone by, when a cold chill wind swept through the area, jerkin me outa my meditation.... I looked up at the ill omen (the clock was tickin)...then dropped my head, thinkin to myself, "well god, it's now or never"'...and headed back into the store..........
...well, the guy slowly turns around and heads into a back room...while I'm thinkin "What? I spose the guy keeps em in a vault!...Arrrrrrg! We only got 13 bucks!!! he comes out and hands LB a whole string neclace of just exactly what she is lookin for. Now comes the hard part. I ask him how long it takes to get to the airport. He says "45 minutes"...I know it's a lie. ......and LB already has a handful of stuff besides what he's just handed her....ssssooooo........ bein the man that I am,...welllllll, let's just say I headed out the door again to pray....in the car....with my head hangin on my chest...
...and she comes out...gets in the car...looks me in the eye....and with no particular discernable expression on her face,...hands me 3 dollars change!.......and laughs!
...now I know some of you good folks think this is just another tall tale....but I took a picture here of our kitchen table back home (an hour ago) while LB was up in bed asleep...the only thing I rearranged was...that I stuck whats left of the turquoise beads on a business card there...so you can clearly see the proof! Now, mind you, LB has only recently been makin time to get back into this beading "thing"...still a novice, but inspired by some stuff there that she picked up along the way in this journey called "life"....BTW!...the "watchtower" is only there cuz this little old ladie who thinks I'm a nice guy has been stoppin by once every 3 weeks for the last 5 years and I use her to test my patience...you know???
...here's a picture we took 45 minutes after the bead episode....not exactly heading DOWNHILL out of the mountains...and nowhere near the freeway heading west into Albuquerkie and the airport on the south edge of town....and I need to find a "NAPA" store to get stuff to clean up what has become another on the list of many rental cars I've trashed....and get something to eat so we don't starve before we make it through "security" at the airport...and so forth...god, and those rental car people were such "icks" in the first place. Never gunna use those guys again!
