We didn't have any of this cold weather last year, or even the year before. I can honestly say I missed the photo taking opportunities, as one of my favorite times to go take pictures is when it's at least -20 Farenheight.
It's a fact that we haven't had an early February as cold as this since 1996, and that was the cold winter that sent me running to live in Wisconsin, on the south shore, after starting my van on fire trying to gt it started on a day when the HIGH was -53F below with a wind chill in the -80's below. We don't get that over here, on this side of Gitchee Gummi, in 10 years I've not seen it below -30F, and that was only once, in 2005.
I was perplexed in fall, hearing all the talk of an El Ninio while I was noticing that I'd never seen my plum trees so full that the branches were literally hanging to the ground. I couldn't remember the pine trees so full of cones, and well, I didn't need a weather man to tell me this was going to be a long cold winter.
We've come through most of this winter unscathed for the cold so far, but we have literally no snow in some places, and very little everywhere else. The long told warnings of this impending cold spell were not to be ignored, however, and strategies were put in place to deal with it everywhere you looked. A big cold arctic blast, was about to blow us hard.
I took full advantage of the opportunity to capture this time over these past few days and spent them not inside sipping cocoa and sitting in a warm south facing window, instead I drove hundreds of miles in all kinds of weather and took a whole lot of photographs. It was big fun! Of course I, Nanook, know how to dress in this kind of weather, in my former work life, I worked outside in this kind of weather all the time, you learn how to stay warm!
Dressed in my moose hide mukluks, cuddle duds long underwear and thick swweat pants, a hat, scarf and a calf length down coat and mittens that open at the fingers for picture taking, i set off at first light. In this weather the car tyres will almost feel like you have a flat, until you drive a few miles and they round out again!
I was in Northeastern Minnesota in the deep north woods, headed down the mountainous terrain towards Gitchee Gummi's icy shores, hoping catch some sunrise photos over what I knew would be steamy waters.
I was not disappointed!
