Are you still in MinneSNOWta Steph? I think the only way I can appreciate snow is in a very natural setting...away from vehicles, the sludge/slush and just enjoy the scenery locked up in a toasty log cabin somewhere in the wilderness with enough food and books to last me. ~lol~

Marnin Sandi! Yes I am still here, I'm bi-statual and actually now reside 20 minutes from Mn on the Wi side of the lake. But, I'm still a Minnesota girl at heart, and heck, I can see it from here!

I did the cozy toasty log cabin on a lake thing before I came here. From 85 to 96 I had an outhouse, a hand pump for water and a wood stove. And yes, the snow stays clean out here in the woods, I am still waiting for a big monster snowstorm to hit us, but they keep heading south this year! I suppose one will come when I don't want it anymore! Mebbe you'll have to pack up some books and take a trip up north some winter. I hear in 2010 or is it 11, is supposed to be a peak Northern Lights year! That would be a great time! I'm already getting excited.

bink!!!! Always great to see you. It's not as scary as it sounds though, ya know! I was so hot in the car I kept having to turn the heat down and no way could I wear my hat. I'll be traveling this week between here and Michigan and northern Mn so I'm sure to find some blue ice to photograph soon! And no, I won't be taking any more excursions along the south shore in such conditions, but it was a fun day while I was at it!

Do tell me you tell someone where you are going and when you'll be back when you do these excursions in some of the more remote locations. Something happens to your car out there....you're going to be the opposite of toast!

marnin loops! Thanks, and yes, before I run out the door I lovingly toss some cookies to the dogs and tell them "I'll be back soon"!

I never really know where I'm going so what would I say? Although I do pretty much know I'll be back by night fall. I always take my Cell Phone with, however much good that will do since there is no reception in those parts! I don't go too far from the main road anymore, but yes, I have lots scary stories of frozen nights up here on the tundra!

I'm looking forward to going to Michigan again tomorrow, they just got slammed with at least 30 more inches of snow since I was there a couple of weeks ago. Last time I was there, I drove for hours and never saw another soul, or a house with anyone living in it!

it warmed up to 4 above just now and it feels almost warm. But it would be noticeable as that is 49 degrees warmer feeling than it was 2 days ago! See, we live to tell about these experiences for the most part, although a few do succumb to the elements and I knew someone once that met that unfortunate fate, and some I know have had close calls with bone shilling real life scary stories of being lost in the woods in this exact weather, overnight. So my little drive around picture taking excursion was really a walk in the park.

Before I left the Herbster shore, as long as I was here I thought I might as well go to Siskiwit Bay Marina and see what it looks like over there. It's a spot I stop at often on my scooter travels in summer.


These two fishing boats are moored in the ice in the slip, waiting for ice out so they can go make a living.


Notice the ice blowing off the lake in the backround! It felt wicked in that strong wind! You can barely make out the tree line.



The tackle shop is shut down tight...



The sailboats are up on their stilts next to the slips waiting for someone to love them. Some of them are shrink wrapped for added protection from the elements.






And on that note, I headed inland. I hadn't taken the road to Iron River from the shoreline highway before but it seemed about 20 miles or so, and about 5 miles before I saw the blue sky again.

I stopped by the Brule River state Forest but where i wanted to go wasn't plowed and it was too cold to go any extra lengths over a photo so I moved on to Blueberry.

Blueberry is a story for another time, let's just suffice it to say it was for sale when I was looking for a place over here and I did even consider it. It's it's own whole town on a corner, buildings galore an Antique collectors dream spot. But it's right on the highway so it really wasn't for me just because of that.

Some day when it's warmer I'll go take some photos of the rest of it, it's quite interesting!




And then on the way home, as long as I had my camera I thought I might as well feed the bears!

Well that was all Sunday and now we're to Monday, it's in the 20's below and I wasn't in as big of a hurry to get to the sunrise show down at the lake because ti takes awhile to reach higher than the steam off the lake.

Well, a lot can change in just one day because when I get there, the steam is mostly gone, and ice is covering the water today.



I love the way the morning sunlight shines on the ice



There was just enough steam to give the sun a prism effect, litle pillars shotting off the rays



Since they have virtually no snow in Duluth, you can walk the rocky shore....



But that's too far away from the real beauty, the ice. You must tread carefully when walking on the ice, for some of it is hollow and you could fall through. Now and then you break through and drop a foot a few inches and it makes an interesting sound. The ice in general makes interesting sounds, it's not quiet here. The waves gently lap at the icy rocks, some of it sticking to make the ice even larger, and the cracking sounds from underneath beckon you to dare to take another step.

As I was saying, you tread lightly and you can get this







There is a shelter on the shore that has a built in fireplace.

What do you think it is?




It is a ship look out!

Thanks loops! Yes, the ice noise is something! Especially when you're crashing through a little, heheh.

Ya know, never once far from my mind the whole day, was the donkey races happening in Little Bay that day where it was almost 150 degrees warmer!
