Nanook, you know it's funny, we did not get a pic taken of the 2 of us together. It was on Sunday after we were heading back from San Pedro we realized we didn't even get a pic together.

CEW attempted to take one of the 2 of us together by doing that holding the camera out front and squeezing in together so we both fit in the camera deal. [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif[/img]

Sunday morning...

It was another early morning. Having experienced the intensity of the mid-morning heat on previous days, we really wanted to get a jump start on the day. Pulling back the window blinds to check if it had rained, I was greeted by this wonderful sight.



We left out shortly after, and it wasn't long before we ran into Harry who said he was going to beg for his breakfast. We couldn't let him do that, so after giving him some cash and while he pocketed it, he asked me (knowing I was from Canada): "What did Pierre Elliot Treadeau (former Prime Minister) do for Belize?" "I don't know, Harry", I replied. In his now familiar chuckle, he said, "He gave us the BelCan bridge". We exchanged pleasantries before going our ways, but later I did checkup the BelCan bridge thing, and sure enough, Harry knew what he was talking about. The man may be homeless, but he was a walking encyclopedia.

To get to San Pedro we had to take the water-taxi at BZD$35 per person return. It would take about an hour and 15 mins to get there, and boy, once I saw the "taxi", I thought this one would be interesting. I don't mind flying, but I'm not keen on being in the middle of nowhere out on the ocean. If CG felt any trepidation, she wasn't showing it. To make matters worse, we didn't get seats under the canopy, so we would have to do the commute sitting in the sun \o/



Our ride was just about full by the time we pulled out, and to my surprise, I quite enjoyed the ride. The sun was hot, but there was a cool wind for most of the time. The water was crystal clear, an observation I was extremely surprised by. My heart skipped a few beats as I looked around and didn't see any life-jackets in the part of the boat where we were seated, but thankfully, the pilot handled the boat extremely well, and we got to our destination safely, and on time.

San Pedro Town "is the major settlement on the island (of Ambergris Caye). San Pedro's populace has grown to 4,000 plus year round inhabitants, with constant pressure from the mainland to immigrate to San Pedro due to a perception by mainlanders that it is the major or most lucrative source of income for the entire country. The residents are mostly of Mexican descent and speak both Spanish and English. The island has the largest concentration of visitor accommodations in Belize and its hotels, fishing and diving facilities are some of the best in the country."

On this day it was HOT! Much to our surprise there were golf carts everywhere, and we quickly realized that these carts and bicycles were the principal mode of transportation on the island. They were being offered for rental everywhere, and given the heat, we figured the only way we were going to see the island was to rent one of the carts, and we did - about USD$45 for 3 hours (including gas cost). Time to tour...

Somebody decide St. Peter looked like this guy, out in front of the Church named after him. Interestingly, San Pedro is the Spanish variant of St. Peter, who is also said to be the patron saint of fishermen.

You're gonna make me start looking more seriously at the cheap Continental deals to Belize out of Houston. I've never really paid them much attention before now. I think that might have to change ... Thanks for stopping by, and also for being so kind in your comments. When doing a trip report, I believe it is important for me to take readers along on the adventure. It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words, but I find that a picture placed within the context of its surroundings; i.e. with narratives, is even better. Because I love the "off beat" stuff, I also aim to show the local as well as the 'toursity' stuff in order to provide balance to the reports. If I can educate/inform while entertaining, then comments like yours are simply the icing on the cake.

I believe a person can have an adventure anywhere. Before going to Belize, we looked at several websites and tour reports that were not very helpful, and so we still wondered what we would do while we were there. Once there, it was incredible the things we found to do, not to mention the number of things we also wanted to do but didn't have the time. So yes, look seriously at some of those discount flights. An open mind and good company are a couple of the keys to creating and enjoying your adventure.

Tourism is the number one industry in what was once a fishing village (San Pedro). Now, fishing is still most excellent, but tourism has far surpassed it as a contributor to the local economy. This is not, however, the edgy tourism of Cancun, with millions of package tourists hitting the beach. No building is higher than a tall coco palm, or three stories.

San Pedro has only 10 streets, with NO pavements, and we're still going down the main one in our golf cart.





I believe there's at least one Jamaican everywhere, and we found this JamBel restaurant sign rather creatively done.
