Greetings! I need recomendations for a warm state to retire ; somewhere that is tranquil, very affordable and at the same time will alow mango, banana and ackee plants to grow. I have been thinking of Florida ; but I don't know the communities down there , and what they have to offer.
We need to get away from the cold because of health reasons. We would also like to get a little of our Jamaican culture , now and then. I would like to put some distance between the reptiles habitats and mine.
If you live outside of Jamaica in a warm community wher there is little or no snow, let me here from you; and tell me why you enjoy living there.

Port St Lucie is very affordable, lots of Jamaicans moving there, West Palm, Ft Lauderdale, Sunrise, Miami you will think you're in Jamaica. Orlando is central but it gets cooler than south of us

Ms.Exced, thank you for the tip on Orlando; because I was not thinking of going as far south as Miami; because I want to be in a calm tranquil setting, not where there is too much action and "pop". So Port Saint Lucie will allow me to grow avocado and mango?

Yes Port St Lucie will allow you to, I live in Orlando and love it, I don't do cold, what we get I can handle it

Are the prices for homes a little higher in Orlando?
I am looking for a 3/2; not trying to impress anyone at this point; I just want to be able to exale, (take the kata off a mi head.)

If yuh waa fi bi heavy into yuh caribbean culture, di frequency of tings happening, an di people, dan yuh cyan beat the "West Palm, Ft Lauderdale, Sunrise" area. The other areas are kina light weight wen it com on tuh dem tings deh. Also yuh wi easier find di Carib tings yuh need, an better quality baked goods in di previously mentioned areas. Orlando can get pretty cold at times. It bin ah while, but mi menba 20 deg wan December an water pipes bursting. Dem bin getting in di 30's too frequent fi mi dem days yah. Mi tell dem, mi noh need fi pay money an com dung yah fi dis $%@&, mi cah stay right whe mi deh an get it, an it free.

J-Kid I hear you; I have enough cold up here; much more this past winter.
I want to be able to get the bake goods and grocery, when I am redy for them ; but I dont want to be in the middle of the action (older guy) looking for a calm community.

OP gwine really have to go and look at the areas north of Dade County and see what fit him budget/lifestyle/ personal preferences ( e.g. newish neighbourhood or older neighbourhood)/...etc etc

Orlando cold don't stick around too long, my cousin lives in Sunrise and love it, she has a town house. I love Orlando

them might as well stay put with that. cause in the middle of summer when it is 150 in Florida, it is 105 in Ga (and with the humidity and at that temp u not feeling much cooler)

GA just colder in the winter.

If you looking boring and where u can wear a light coat for 2 days in winter how about Palm Coast Fl. Right of I-95, 30 min north of Daytona Beach, 30 min south of St Augustine, 1 hr south of Jacksonville


As others may have stated the best bet is to rent a place in the area for a good while to get a feel for it
