Although the gun violance in Jamaica is one on the highest in the world, it is still for the most part isolated. You hear about it, but you rarely experience it.

In South Africa for example, which has the highest rate of violent crime in the world, I haven't met one South African who hasn't been robbed, held up at gunpoint, carjacked or didn't lose a family member or close friend to gunshot. I am not trying to excuse what is happening, but I think these things can happen anywhere. </div></div>

when u inna the garrison it no feel the same like pon the outside because I would hear the gunshots from my house in Kgn 20 from time to time and then mi listen 6:00 news to determine if mi can go through waterhouse or any of the other short cut just because mi no want to buck up on any road block or see no dead body. ...Really couldnt manage the Blvd traffic inna the early morning.

Talking about Hagley Park Road. Last year when I was there a friend of mine inveigle me into buying tickets for a play called Bruk Bad Pickny (?) at a theater located in a (for me) new plaza on Hagley Park Road. My friend didn't feel good on the evening so I went with her daughter whose boyfriend was one of the actors in the play.

After the play ended about midnight she wanted to wait for him and that took so long that I decided to go home without them, so I went out to Hagley Park Road and fanned down a taxi. I got home safe and sound.

Sometimes the news is much worse than the experience.

I have gone back to Jamaica several times (twice in '93, twice in '94, twice in '95, 96, 99 [0nce] and twice in 2005) and I always stay in Kingston. Each time I say I'm not staying in Kingston since mi know it like di back a mi hand, but di farthest mi guh so far is Old Harbour and Golden Spring.
Di only shot mi hear was when "Shine up alla di gun dem" from Shabba start play a one Stone Love dance.
1995 mi a walk pon Red Hills Road 'bout 9 o'clock inna di night wen 2 bredda juk mi dung. One a di bredda seh "if yu run mi shat yu."
Soh mi tan up an start reason wid dem. Mi did hide mi Green Card an mi licence inna mi shoes, an put mi chain dem inna mi pocket, suh wen di bredda seh "weh yu have?" Mi seh "bwoy, yu wan si mi have one ten dolla an wan chain, eno."
Di bredda seh: "di chain good?"
Mi seh: "yu can get a money fi it, but noh tek di pendant cause a mi girl gimme an she a goh feel a way."
Di bredda seh: "ten dolla a money?"
An mi seh: "yu wan si is a money mi a goh look, eno, das why yu si mi yasoh now."
An di bredda seh: "yow, a red hills road dis, eno. Yu cyan walk yasoh by yu self dem time a night ya."
Mi seh: "a chu mi noh have noh money, man."
An im seh: a'right, gwan walk."

Dem tek di chain an di ten dolla, an inna all di years mi a goh bak dat a di closest mi com to violence pon mi trip dem.

But like every where else violence is constant. I have friends from Guyana, plus my friends in Jamaica who keep me updated on all the crap that goes down, and it really doesn't sound much different from the South Bronx or Brooklyn. I mean, every week a young child is killed or seriously injured, and some decent and promising kid is killed by some idiot in Brooklyn. And then the killers mother will come out and tell you it couldn't be her son that killed the other kid.

It doesn't mean all the bad things don't happen. I guess you just have to be careful where you go , and keep your eyes open. That night I walked into that one unnecessarily, and it's just because I was having so much fun.
