Yasuo Takase, Japanese Ambassador to Jamaica (centre) joins guests (from left) Albert Nakash, Thomas Issa, and Joshua and Aaron Thwaites during a celebration of the Japanese national holiday Kodomo no Hi (Children's Day) on May 5 at the Ambassador's residence. Much like March's Hinamatsuri (Girl's Festival), Kodomo no Hi is dedicated to the happiness and well-being of children. Kodomo no Hi evolved out of Tango no Sekku (Boy's Day). Families observe the day by putting out a multi-tiered display topped by the Kabuto, the traditional Japanese military helmet, which is symbolic of a healthy boy. Other elements include flags known as Koinobori, and Chimaki, a special pastry wrapped in Iris leaves. (PHOTOS: RORY DALEY)
