THE University of the West Indies (UWI) has come in for severe criticisms from Jamaica Observer online readers over its sacking of Professor Brendan Bain as head of the Regional Co-ordinating Unit of the Caribbean HIV/AIDS Regional Training (CHART) Network. The university's decision on Tuesday came amidst pressure from several regional lobby groups who took issue with Prof Bain's expert testimony in a constitutional challenge brought by a gay Belizean man against that country's criminal code in September 2010. The noted professor had testified that the risk of contracting HIV was significantly higher among men who have sex with men. However, Observer readers are largely of the view that Prof Bain's intellectual freedom has been breached. Here are some edited comments:
