Acting Minister of Agriculture Derrick Kellier (second right) observes the tagging of a heifer by veterinarian Dr Paul Cadogan during the 62nd Staging of the Denbigh Agricultural, Industrial and Food Show on August 3 in May Pen, Clarendon. Assisting are animal health technician at the ministry, Annette Dennis (right); and Hopeton Smith from the Bodles Research Station in Old Harbour, St Catherine. The tagging is being done under the ministry's National Animal Identification and Traceability System, aimed at protecting against praedial larceny, ensuring food safety, and guarding against the spread of animal diseases. Under the new programme every head of cattle in the country will be tagged and issued a passport, which will contain critical information about the animal, and will be mandatory for the movement of all animals. Failure to comply with the new programme will be punishable under the law.
