Colonel Torrance D G Lewis, Chairman of the Jamaica Legion (left) receives a cheque from Arnold J Nicholson, Minister of Foreign Affairs & Foreign Trade, towards the running of Curphey Home for indigent ex-soldiers, while General Sectary of the Legion Desmond Clarke looks on. The cheque was made possible from donations collected at the 52nd Independence Church Service held in London on July 26. Established in 1949, the Jamaica Legion is an affiliate of the Royal Commonwealth ex-Services League. In addition to Curphey Home -- which is located in Newport, Manchester, and which currently has 10 wards, three of whom served in World War II -- the legion provides monthly and quarterly financial assistance to over 100 veterans and their widows.
