Farmers opposed to a $1.4-billion mining project in the Peruvian southern region of Islay, 1,100 km south of Lima, block a road in Islay, yesterday. The government deployed 1,000 soldiers to back up police and order forces already in the area, after several weeks of violent protests in which two farmers and a policeman were killed. The farmers protest against the $1.4-billion Tia Maria mine, a project by Mexican-owned copper firm Southern Peru in the country's Arequipa region, which they say will pollute their water and damage agriculture.
