Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller (fourth left) poses for a photo op with key stakeholders in the health sector during a courtesy call at Jamaica House on Monday. From left are Richard Gawthorne, Emma Scanlan and Professor Magdi Yacoub from Chain of Hope UK; Minister of Health Dr Fenton Ferguson; representatives from Chain of Hope Jamaica, Diane Edwards and Carla Newsam; and Dr Kevin Harvey, permanent secretary in the Ministry of Health. Chain of Hope UK has been assisting Jamaica by providing urgent medical care to critically-ill children with heart disease since the 1960s, through their cadre of surgeons, consultants, nurses and coordinators. The prime minister lauded the organisation for its invaluable contribution to the health sector, including the saving of hundreds of lives and building the skills of local surgeons. The UK team was in the island to attend a cardiology conference and to check on the progress of the multimillion-dollar cardiac wing being constructed at the Bustamante Hospital for Children.
