THE first time I heard -- at about age 11 or 12 -- that students had to pay money to sit the Cambridge Ordinary Level Examination I almost fainted. Say what? You are submitting yourself to the ordeal of examination fire, and you must offer payment to the examination authority for each subject! This aspect of life required quick and careful explication, I thought.
