The damage done to Haiti by Hurricane Matthew has triggered memories of my formative years as a child and learning about Haiti through many different lenses. Surely, the first lesson came from the righteous Christians who taught me of Haiti’s presumed wickedness for practising Vodoun. I also learned about the poverty and disease that plagued Haiti, which in most instances were connected to their apparent evil dealings with Vodoun and not the result of the post-Independence aggression of the United States and France.
