Mona Preparatory joined the more than 200 schools across the island that are part of the LASCO ReLeaf Environmental Awareness Programme (REAP) when it hosted the Kingston launch of the 2016-2017 season close to two weeks ago. Here, students from Mona and a dozen other prep and primary schools from Kingston & St Andrew mark the moment with Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service Fayval Williams (back, centre), CEO of LASCO REAP Stephen Newland (back, right) and LASCO Distributors Marketing Manager Kelia-Gaye Dunbar. Now in its fifth year, LASCO REAP – which uses the theme Together, We Grow – seeks to increase community engagement in preserving the environment by instilling an appreciation for the natural environment in children and members of the strongest community per square mile in Jamaica – the church. The programme has grown from 50 schools in the first year to over 250, and has engaged over 500,000 students across the island. Through the project, over 150 gardens have been started and improved, 12,500 trees planted and 1.2 million plastic bottles collected. LASCO Affiliated Companies has committed over $30 million to the initiative since it began.
