We tend to associate harvest celebrations with the church, but for the past 10 years, Ascot Primary School in Portmore, St Catherine, has been collecting gifts of fruits, groceries, toiletries and other items brought by students, teachers and parents, and donating them to children’s homes, golden age homes and the children’s ward of Spanish Town Hospital. For the ceremony staged on the school grounds on Friday, girls donned white dresses and boys wore white shirts and black pants. Here, grade four students (from left) Jada Gore, Kasheef Hanson, Stacey Thomas, Kezaniah Murray, and Abigail Williams lay their gifts on a display table after ceremoniously marching them up the aisle, with Principal Mark Jackson overseeing the proceedings. “This is one of our ways of giving back to our community, and we believe that national recognition should be given to such activity with the hope of igniting the spirit of giving across schools in Jamaica, especially in this Yuletide season,” Principal Jackson told the Jamaica Observer.
