I have never been good at the whole office politics thing. I go to work, keep my head down, do my job, and when I leave work I leave all my concerns and thoughts about work at the office and do not bring them home with me.
It is no secret that the company I work for is in trouble. The recession really took a toll on us and we have failed to recover. In 2007 there were fifty people in my department, now we are down to ten. I am just trying to hang on for two more years at which time I will be eligible for an early retirement package.
One thing that has always bothered me is that when an employee leaves the company I work for to move on to another position elsewhere or to just stay at home and raise their kids etc... my department managers will often have a little farewell for them, whether it is ordering some Chinese food or getting a cake and a gift etc... this happens even if the employee was only with us for a short period of time. However, when loyal, hard working employees who have worked for the company for twenty plus years get a pink slip they are escorted by security to their desk to gather their belongings and then shown the door, never to be seen or heard from again.
Well our latest layoff occurred this week and I really feel bad for those who were let go and escorted out the back door like trash being disposed of. I have an urge to contact them and to organize a lunch date to just acknowledge their contribution.
My question is this... since our department is very small now, I am positive that word of such a lunch will get back to my manager and my assistant manager. if I invite them to come, I am sure that they will say no due to the fact that it will be quite awkward, however I do not want them to feel like they are the bad guys as they tried everything in their power to help save our jobs but in the end the decision came down from head office. Our department is very small and close knit and my fear is alienating myself further from my managers. I am probably the closest thing to a loner in my department, like I said, I go to work, keep my head down, do my work and leave.
So should I organize a lunch and do not mention it to management, mention it to management and invite them, or just call my former fellow employees and wish them well and forget about organizing a lunch in their honour
