It happened Tuesday afternoon at the Ben May Main Library on Government Street. "She first thought it was an April's Fool's joke," said public relations officer Amber Guy.
Though it was April Fool's Day, what happened was no prank. Police say Walter Jeznach, 45, put a note on the checkout counter demanding cash. Guy said the librarian explained they didn't have any money. "They only thing we have that we charge for are DVDs. They really are the best deal in town. It's 75 cents to check out for a week, so we never are going to have a lot of money on hand," said Guy.
"This is the first of its kind that officers responded to a library for a commercial robbery," said Officer Terence Perkins. Police say they caught Jeznach about minutes later and arrested him for robbery. "Although, he did not get away with any cash, he's still charged with robbery for passing a note demanding cash," said Perkins. Police say Jeznach did not have a weapon, and no one was hurt.
