Malti the Asian elephant dies of rare disease at Calgary Zoo

Malti, the newest addition to the Calgary Zoo's Asian elephant herd, died Saturday, losing a battle against a rare disease.

The zoo broke the news about the one-year-old elephant calf.

"Shortly after 2 p.m. Malti awoke from a nap and collapsed," said zoo veterinarian Sandie Black.

"We will be conducting a post-mortem exam over the weekend and hope to have more information about what specifically caused her death by early in the week." Several of Malti's caretakers were there when she died.

The calf fell sick earlier this week and was immediately given anti-viral medication.

Test results confirmed Friday the elephant had elephant herpesvirus, a rare but life-threatening species- specific disease.

"This morning we were just a little bit hopeful because she made it through the night," Calgary Zoo spokeswoman Laurie Herron said.

Zoo veterinarians believe it's likely the virus attacked the lining of Malti's blood vessels in her heart, Herron said.

The four adult elephants, including Malti's mother, Maharani, had the chance to gather around the elephant calf to say a final goodbye of sorts.

The sudden death has been devastating, Herron said. The young elephant was a zoo favourite.

"The terrible toll this virus has taken on these already endangered animals is heartbreaking," said Cathy Gaviller, director of conservation, research and education for the Calgary Zoo in a news release.

"We can only hope we will learn something from Malti's case that will benefit the research into this disease to help save other elephants in the future." source
