Wife came down with this stuff last week. (on top of her other health problems) 4:00 am in the morning I'm rushing her to ER. Right lung plural space filled with fluid. Chest drain inserted and 900cc of fluid removed.(sigh) Her temp 101.8 degrees. Er Docs took culture (swab from nose area). Confirmed Type A influenza.(the one the flu shot did not cover) 12 hrs laters I'm coughing and hacking. ER nurse takes my temp. 101.2, they register me and throw me into room across the hall from my wife and start treating me...WE both had flu shot this year, only 25% effective.

I've never had anything knock me off my feet as hard and fast as this kreeping crud. You will know when you have it. And nothing you do is going to stop it. Wishful thinking for some if you think you can prevent it...it ain't happening. If you are exposed, you are going to get it.
Keep washing your hands and wear a mask in public...Seriously, this is the only prevention.

Some medications suppress your immune system. I know that certain asthma meds do, and I think I heard that some cancer meds do also. Sorry to hear about your wife on top of her other issues.

Lonewolf, I am sorry about your wife getting the flu on top of her other health issues. I am also sorry about you getting the flu too. You are right it is no joke this year. Just keep washing hands and face & be safe. Did they at least give you some tamiflu?

Wahalla, CeaBee, Kia....thank you. Life can be cold as well as the winter weather. We were hit with about 8 inches of snow yesterday. I keep thinking spring...warmer weather, better health etc.

This is why I wonder if there is any point in getting the shot.

Hmm...medicine a science, but not an exact science. They get it right most of the time. The small inconvenience of the stick in arm is worth it to me...regardless. The older you get the more the shot is needed. Old bodies have more trouble fighting stuff than young bodies. Complications from flu can lead to more serious health problems.

But, gett'n shot or not gett'n shot ya roll'n the dice.
