So what's happening here? Two women passing a baby over a dead body? I've got to say I don't care for it too much, but at least the child is not old enough to scream out in terror.

Are there any requirements like it has to be a relative and not just any total stranger?

has to be the youngest relative in the family (so mi hear)

I think it is so the spirit of the dead person will watch over the child but dont quote me

Well, I'm too late to be the youngest, but I guess if there was a chance for me to get some protection out of it, I would not care if two grown men passed me over a casket. Not in front of people though.

Considering who is left and the beef we have had over the years, you're right. I'd likely get a haunting instead of protection. I guess that's why they say the youngest because they haven't had a chance to fall out with them yet.

While I may not take this practice seriously, nobody would pass a child of mine, if I had one, over a casket. I'm just not having it.

I cannot say it's a cultural difference because I don't follow all old wives tales of my own. If the child is able to find a guardian angel, then it will be through some other method.
