growing up in jamaica surround by blacks, racism is not beaten down on us everywhere you go. You can live anywhere u can afford to live, people noh clutch dem bag harder when u walk down the street, u can hail a taxi without it, slowing down and passing you by. Black people growing in America are subjected to this type of racism and in an interest to distance themselves from the racist man, they denounce the name.


Jamaicans growing in Jamaica have not had the daily racism so dem name is not an issue

For each of my parents' last names, independent organizations researched the families' names.

One ancestor migrated with the German immigrants but he did not settle with them in Seaford Town as he was neither blond nor Catholic. He had red curly hair and one researcher speculated that he was a poor Jew who fled Germany. He married an African woman and they settled in the hill country of St. James where he was a shoemaker and subsistence farmer.

Ancestors from the other side of my family came as Moravian missionaries settling in Manchester where some taught school and others planted ginger and bananas for export. They lived out their lives being humble and kind and totally ingrained in their communities.

None had any connections with Cuba.

Wha wrong wid Cuba. My mother was Cuban.

Speaking of Cuba... My peeps were migrant immigrants to JA from Cuba. My great, great grandaddy did name &quot;Joel&quot; according to mi grandpa and dem name mi afta im (di name was also fitting cause mi barn roun Chrismus time ) .
