I know what it mean but where does the buck come from?

"Tun up till it buck" is when you turn up yu radio till the volume dial can't go any further but where does the word buck orginate from in that context?

my guess is that it is the usual jamaican substitution of the "k" sound for the "t" sound. the original word is probably "butt" - meaning a push or a blow, usually with the head (o gosh, so many double entendres).

"the goat butted the man", in patwa we would say "the goat buck the man". see also the word "headbutt".

I wonder if this has anything to do with bucking broncos in a rodeo setting. You know how they make the broncos and bulls buck right?



I am not sure if this is done manually or if a machine is used to tighten it. If a machine is used, I am wondering if it means keep turning it up (tightening it) until the animal starts bucking.

By the way is there a tradition of bucking horses, broncos and bulls in Jamaica. I aske because of expressions like "bull bucka". Have we ever had rodeos? Were these events at agricultural fairs?

but there is also the use of buck as a maximiser... Deh cyar buk mi ah tell u... means u put it to the maximum speed it could go... or when filling a bucket... ur parents admonished u.." nuh buck hit".. dont fill it to the brim when u carried water from spring...

I havent heard the term for a long time..ancedotal evidence that patwa vocaulary is retreating to a version of Jamaicanised english...
