NEW YORK (AP) -- An Illinois police officer suspected in the disappearance of his fourth wife pleaded Wednesday for her to come home, even as he maintained that she left him for another man.

"Come home. Tell people where you are," Drew Peterson said on NBC's "Today."

Stacy Peterson was last seen October 28. Authorities say the case is a potential homicide investigation and have identified her husband, a 53-year-old police sergeant in the Chicago suburb of Bolingbrook, as a suspect.

Peterson denied that he harmed his 23-year-old wife or had anything to do with her disappearance, saying that "she found somebody else, those were her words."

He also said he had no plans to help search for her because he thought she left willfully. He also said he was a "media sensation" and would attract attention that could harm the search effort.

"Why would I look for somebody who I don't believe is missing? She's just gone. She's where she wants to be," Peterson said.

The interview aired a day after the body of Peterson's third wife, Kathleen Savio, was exhumed in Illinois.

Savio was found in the bathtub, her hair soaked in blood from a head wound. A coroner's jury ruled the 40-year-old's death was an accidental drowning, even though there was no water in the bathtub. Investigators had theorized the water had drained out, but now say evidence suggests that someone killed Savio and tried to make it look like an accident. Watch suspicions of Savio's sister »

Peterson acknowledged that there were mysterious circumstances surrounding Savio's death, but said he didn't know what, if anything, the exhumation would accomplish.

"It's a shame her rest in peace has to be disturbed for something like this," he told NBC.

Peterson described his relationship with both women as troubled, saying both came from troubled homes and struggled with depression. But he denied involvement in either case.

Peterson has been relieved of duty and placed on suspension without pay pending completion of an internal affairs investigation and hearing.

BOLINGBROOK, Illinois (CNN) -- Police are using tracking dogs, airplanes, infrared sensors and volunteers on foot Tuesday to look for a young mother who disappeared nine days ago, leaving her 4- and 2-year-old children behind.

Friends and relatives of Stacy Peterson, 23, say her disappearance is suspicious.

Her husband of four years, Bolingbrook police Sgt. Drew Peterson, 53, reportedly has told police his wife said she was leaving him for another man, and police are not treating the disappearance as a criminal investigation.

But the woman's aunt, Candace Aikin, of El Monte, California, said Stacy Peterson confided in her that there were problems during a visit to the Peterson home in suburban Chicago last month.

"She said that she was afraid because he was following her around 24/7, even inside the house," Aikin said. "He was very obsessed and stalking her, even inside her house.

"She was very, very full of stress and just not happy in her marriage at all," Aikin said. Watch the aunt's impression of the marriage »

Steve Cesare, a friend of Stacy's, said she sent him an e-mail on October 17 saying her husband was "controlling, manipulative and somewhat abusive."

"I knew they had problems," Cesare said. "But the part where it says that he was becoming abusive, that concerned me."

He added, "She wouldn't have left her kids. That's just not going to happen."

Drew Peterson has told police his wife called him from a cell phone late October 28 to say she was leaving him for another man.

"I believe she's not missing. She's where she wants to be," Drew Peterson told The Chicago Sun-Times last week. "I have no reason to suspect foul play."

He told the newspaper, "I believed our marriage was good, but maybe she didn't."

Drew Peterson told the Sun-Times his wife was seeing a psychiatrist, taking anti-depressants and had "mood issues" since the death of her older sister last year from cancer.

But he told the newspaper he found it "very unusual" that Stacy Peterson would leave her children and his kids from a previous marriage whom she had adopted.

"She's a very good mom. For the last year or so, she's been very short-tempered, snapping on everyone, but still a good mom," the Sun-Times quoted Drew Peterson as saying.

CNN has been unable to contact Drew Peterson for comment.

But local prosecutors are taking another look at the 2004 death of his third wife, Kathleen Savio, who drowned in a bathtub after the couple had divorced.

Savio's sister, Sue Doman, said Savio expressed fear of Drew Peterson.

"She told me all the time, 'He's gonna kill me. It's gonna look like an accident,' " Doman said.

Doman said she didn't believe her sister could have died in the way the investigation concluded.

"I don't understand accidental drowning. You just don't drown in the bathtub, especially a small whirlpool. You just don't do that," she said.

In Illinois on Tuesday, police and volunteers were organizing new search efforts.

State Police Master Sgt. Luis Gutierrez told the Chicago Tribune that investigators were searching nine "areas of interest" using cadaver-sniffing dogs.

The couple's home and a pond at a nearby airport also had been searched, the paper reported.

Investigators told the Sun-Times they also want to talk to the couple's children.

Meanwhile, relatives are clinging to hope.

"I'm still holding on. I'm believing that she's still with us. I'm not going to give up hope at all," Aikin said.

Drew Peterson believes his missing wife left voluntarily -- even taking extra clothes with her -- and isn't a victim of foul play, the Bolingbrook police sergeant said Wednesday, breaking his silence on the puzzling disappearance of Stacy Peterson.

"I believe she's not missing. She's where she wants to be," he said. "I have no reason to suspect foul play."

His 23-year-old wife has been seeing a psychiatrist, taking Effexor, a prescription anti-depressant medication and struggling with "mood issues" since the cancer death last year of her sister, Peterson said during a brief interview in the couple's Bolingbrook home.

"Ever since then, Stacy has been different," the 53-year-old Peterson said. "There's been mood issues. She's been under the care of a psychiatrist."

That carried over into their last conversation, he said. She left their home Sunday morning to help a relative paint, then called him at their home at about 9 p.m. Sunday.

"She seemed snotty," Peterson said, describing the call as "unusual" though he wouldn't disclose details of what was said.

That call at 9 p.m. Sunday was his last communication with his wife -- and even then he said he didn't know where she was calling from.

"I don't know where she was when she called," he said.

Her relatives reported her missing about 4 a.m. Monday and there have been no signs of her since then.

Illinois State Police said Wednesday they have used tracking dogs and an airplane equipped with a heat-sensing device to search for the 5-foot-2-inch tall, 100-pound woman, but have not located her.

Peterson, a 29-year veteran of the Bolingbrook Police Department, said he doesn't know why his wife of four years would leave him and their two children, ages 2 and 4, behind. She also adopted his children from a previous marriage, he said.

"I find that very unusual," he said of her absence. "She's a very good mom. For the last year or so, she's been very short-tempered, snapping on everyone, but still a good mom."

Stacy, who also took classes at Joliet Junior College, hadn't talked of suicide, Peterson said.

He said he thought their marriage was solid.

"I believed our marriage was good, but maybe she didn't," he said.

He believes the publicity surrounding her disappearance may prompt her to return, but added cryptically," there's other things involved."

Now taking leave from his job -- which he was set to retire from on Dec. 16 -- Peterson said he talked "for a while" on Monday night to state police investigators searching for his wife.

He said he found her purse, cell phone and even some clothing gone after she left their two-story brick home on Sunday.

During the brief session with several reporters, Peterson banned any cameras, saying: "I would like to have my anonymity."

He sat at a desk in a first-floor study, with pictures of the couple's two kids -- Lacy, 2, and Anthony, 4 -- behind him on a bookcase.

Other pictures of the children and a photo of Peterson with his wife, sat nearby in the study.

Two sons from a prior marriage, now ages 12 and 15, also live in the house.

Peterson ripped media reports that Will County authorities are reviewing the 2004 death of his third wife, Kathleen Savio, who drowned in a tub in her Bolingbrook home shortly after the couple had divorced.

A state police investigation concluded the death was accidental, but Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow said Tuesday he wants to take another look at the case.

"She just had an accident," he said. "Yes, it was an unusual accident."

That announcement, he said, has created public suspicion that he was somehow involved in her death -- something he adamantly denied.

"It bothers me. I've led an honorable life and people are looking at me sideways," he said. "It hurts. I just have to live through it."

He also complained that publicity surrounding his wife's disappearance had disrupted the family, even keeping his children from going Trick-or-Treating on Halloween.

"My klds can't even go Trick-or-Treat. I hate it," he said. "I'm a prisoner here."

He declined to answer a number of different questions, citing the ongoing investigation and family privacy.

"I'm not going to say anything that would jeopardize my family," he said.
