the big window - is it braced with something? aren't they afraid the prisoners will escape ... wait - that looks pretty cushy to me for prison. maybe it really rehabilitates them ... or make them want to commit more crimes to go back to those nice quarters.

Halden Fengsel is a maximum security prison, with a big wall around its 75 acres, as you can see in this photo. It opened in 2010.

Yes, there are flat screen tvs at Halden, inmates have their own bathrooms, and every 10-12 prisoners share a kitchen. The prison guards have no weapons, and most are women, as this has been found to reduce aggression. There are jogging trails, and million dollar artwork on the prison walls.
Norway believes in prisoner rehabilitation, and design their prisons to be humane - to build up the prisoner. The recidivism rate is a low 20 per cent.
In Norway, the maximum prison sentence is 21 years - there's no life sentence, unless the judge makes a special order that detention can be extended pending evaluation of the prisoner - as is happening with Anders Breivik, the madman who shot up 77 people on an island couple years ago (he's not at Halden, though, he's at another max security prison, Ila, that seems just as "homey"). Here is an example of a solitary confinement cell at Ila. There are bars on the windows here, though.
