Raymond Graham, Gleaner Writer Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, a triple gold medallist at last year's World Championships in Moscow, will open her 2014 campaign today with a run in the women's 60 metres at the 13th staging of the Queen's Grace Jackson track and field meet at the National Stadium. The meet is one of two big events down today. The other, the St Elizabeth Technical Invitational, will be held on the school's grounds in Santa Cruz. Both meets are set to start at 8:30 a.m. At the National Stadium, where a record 2,600 athletes will be in attendance, Fraser- Pryce, last year's IAAF female Athlete of the Year, and several members of the MVP Track Club, including 2012 World Indoor 60 metres silver medallist Nesta Carter, will launch their indoor campaigns by taking part in two special invitational 60 metres events. The women's 60m is set for 6 p.m. Also expected to compete in the men's 60m are Michael Frater and Antiguan, Daniel Bailey. As usual, much of the spotlight will be on the high schools that are preparing for the March 25-29 Boys and Girls' Championships. Calabar High, Jamaica College, Kingston College, among the boys, will be on show while top girls' team from Holmwood Technical, St Jago High and Vere Technical will be in action today. Organiser wants efficiency Meet organiser Olive McNaughton is hoping to start on time. "We want to ensure that we have an efficiently run meet and I am hoping that the coaches cooperate as we have got a record number of entries and we will only have one hour of light, so we are hoping there will be no hitches," said McNaughton who added that entries in the 200 metres are overwhelming. The 200m should feature another tussle between Calabar High's Class One stars Javon Francis and Michael O'Hara. O'Hara clocked 21.29 to beat Francis 21.33 at the recent Douglas Forrest Meet. Kingston College's 18-year-old Anguillan sprinter Zharnel Hughes will make his local debut. Hughes was the best sprinter in the Caribbean last year after winning the 100 metres at both the Carifta and the Junior Pan Am Games where he turned back local star Jahzeel Murphy on both occasions. He is expected to compete in the 400 metres today. Events down to take place today are the 200m, 400m, 60m and 4x400 metres on the track. In the field there will be long jump, high jump, discus, shot put and triple jump. Over in Santa Cruz, the girls from Edwin Allen High will be the star attractions while home team St Elizabeth Technical are expected to parade their World Youth champion, Marvin Williams, in the 400m hurdles open.
