The conversation started from me recalling the Luana project which started out as a project of this scale... the idea is not simply a transhipment harbour, Extention of Kingston harbour.. but a breakers yard, a dry dock for ship repairs St Thomas, manufacturing hub adjecent to goat island, Verhanham field......
course some one will comment that u cant take Wahallas word that the man i spoke to is knowledgable is connected...and she will need a cousin to confirm what I wrote here .....
- It is a done deal from the government and opposition perspective... I questioned if it was a done deal from a Chinese harbour perspective ? Then there is a question of financing the entire project ????
- From a bizness perspective, the principal selling point for this capital intense project is the stability of the Jamaican political system... and an issue that i have mentioned... Jamaica changes governments without the messy nihilisim of Ukraine
- I asked who will operate the harbor Goat island once the Chinese Build it... He suggested i come and run it in jest... but the long and short it is still not clear who will run it... Every one says Chinese Harbour but they are an engineering firm......
- apparently Chinese Harbor and a consortium (unclear who the consortium) were offered to buy Kingston container port and adjecent land but they said it wasnt fit for purpose....they did not want a brown field site they wanted a green field site
- Coal from the US is currently cheaper and will fall as the us converts to gas my comment...
- I am concerned that if they use coal, they will use Best Available Technology ?... Coal fire technology with scrubbers and carbon capture is possible to have a coal station with as low impact as a gas fire station. However this will deployed, not clear... I have been reading that the chinese have been building this style of power plants...
- To operated the hydrulics lifts systems that a harbour requires alot of power, high density concentrated power ... the use of solar energy while wonderful would not be operationally fesible...
- There I asekd if there is a concept of design document ie what they are going to build... that hasnt been made available, but the government is saying that it needs a Enviromental Impact assessment, how ccan they do an EIA without see the operating concept
- There is a multifaceted project... Some one else un named will start Verhnham Feild but who hasnt been identified...A dry Dock and
- A industrial park will be built adjcent to goat island
- Cuba is building a similar facility at Mariel Harbour something i mentioned on here previously. Course unno know what Mariel is famous for....
- He doesn't believe and the driving force behind the Hub that the Nicaraguan Canal is feasible....
didd yuh ask imm y jamaica cood natt finance de hub by itself ann reap da reward instead aff sellinn out to farreeen intarest dat will gitt moas aff da profit?

Beijing air pollution now 800% higher than WHO limits
China continues to sing the environmental blues, with air pollution levels in the capital city of Beijing now so high that they exceed the World Health Organization's (WHO) recommended safety level by nearly eight-fold. Bloomberg reports that recent air samples taken by Beijing's Municipal Environmental Monitoring Center reveal levels of fine particulate matter, PM2.5, hovering just under 200 micrograms per cubic meter (mcg/m3), or about 800 percent higher than the WHO limit of 25 mcg/m3.
The most threatening form of particulate matter, PM2.5, is the designation given to very fine particles that measure smaller than 2.5 mcg in diameter. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lists PM2.5 as the most harmful type of particulate pollution for humans, because it is easily inhaled and, due to its small size, capable of lodging and accumulating deep within the lungs and respiratory system.
According to reports, levels of PM2.5 measuring 198 mcg/m3 were detected in China's Tiananmen Square around 11 a.m. on February 22, prompting China's Ministry of Environmental Protection to dispatch 12 groups of investigators to three different Chinese provinces to see if local authorities there are following proper environmental guidelines. This includes enforcing appropriate regulations on highly polluting industries like steel and coal production.
"Beijing maintained its air pollution alert at orange, triggering orders for some enterprises to limit production and a ban on outdoor barbecues and fireworks, as smog levels were projected to stay hazardous until at least Monday morning," explains Bloomberg, noting that extreme levels of air pollution are being detected all across China. "Smog will persist until Monday morning in Beijing, Tianjin, and parts of Hebei, Shandong, Henan, Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces," adds the report.
Many years of heavy pollution has destroyed 8 million acres of Chinese farmland
Unfortunately for the Chinese people, the human health consequences of all this air pollution extend far beyond simply inhaling particulate matter when out in public. Back in December, Chinese officials announced that more than 8 million acres, or about 3.33 million hectares, of fertile farmland is now too polluted for growing crops.
China's Vice Minister of Land and Resources Wang Shiyuan told reporters at a news conference right after Christmas that all farming operations on this polluted land would have to cease immediately to make way for remediation and cleanup efforts. He did not, however, comment on whether food already grown and harvested from this polluted land would still be permitted for retail sale.
"These areas cannot continue farming," he stated, noting that all 8 million acres are moderately to severely polluted with toxic chemicals.
With arable land area the size of Belgium now lost, not to mention Beijing having experienced its worst air pollution "storm" on record back in January, it is no wonder that China is constantly in the news for selling and exporting polluted food. According to the Chinese government, the country needs at least 120 million hectares of arable land to meet its food needs, an amount that it is now barely achieving.
"There is a price to pay for becoming the world's factory country, and now it's beginning to show up," adds one CBC.ca commenter to the conversation. "There is also a price to pay for doing things in a way that businesses favors.... It's just a matter of time before people have to clamor for change in order to keep from starving."

5 Reasons Jamaica Should Own Its Global Logistics Hub Without China
1. To Ensure That There’s A Monetary Benefit To Jamaicans At All Levels
The most recent proposal to lease or sell the Goat Islands is one that can only be described as ludicrous. Jamaica may not know what mineral resources exist there, but they do know there is great potential. Therefore, the only deal that could be acceptable is one that ensures a majority of funds or other proceeds from exploration would be retained in Jamaica; and funds that are removed should be sufficiently taxed to benefit the nation; and employment opportunities for both skilled and unskilled persons should weigh heavily in our favor, since we know the Chinese penchant for using their own mass workers in foreign projects.
2. Environmental Concerns In Regards To Goat Islands
With the track record of the Chinese concerning public-health issues, and in particular air pollution — their treatment of the aquatic environment, in addition to their death tolls and treatment of the environment — won’t that put the island and its people at risk?
3. Jamaica Is Already Well Positioned To Be A Logistics Hub Without The Chinese
In Kingston Harbour, Jamaica has the basics of what is required — a good location, berths, and significant investment in cranes and land-based facilities. We know the required infrastructure to get it up to speed for the expanded Panama Canal — dredging of Kingston Harbour with accompanying deepening of the docking areas and added investment in landside plant and equipment.
The dredging must be self-financed, and the Port Authority and the Government of Jamaica have it in their power to announce a cess for the use of the harbor that will allow for the recovery of the cost of the dredging over an extended period.
4. Jamaica Has Already Proven It Can Build Out A Service Industry With Tourism
The prize for successful hub development is great. Singapore, for example, estimates that more than 100,000 are employed directly in its various logistics hubs, and that logistics hubs account for about 7 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP) and its GDP is 18 times that of Jamaica’s.
All Jamaica must be ready to show the investor that it understands what is needed in a service industry. It has done it for tourism, which, after all, is a service industry, and it can do it for logistics hubs.
5. Jamaica Doesn’t Want To End Up In a Relationship With The Chinese That Is Similar To The Ones In Africa
Africans have become resentful, though, unhappy with unbalanced relationships in which China has taken proprietorship of African natural resources using Chinese labor and equipment without transferring skills and technology. “China takes our primary goods and sells us manufactured ones. This was also the essence of colonialism,” Lamido Sanusi, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, wrote in the Financial Times earlier this year.

it has not even got to that state yey..they are just talking a "framework for discussion".
but having said that ..we don't know what they planning but somebody knows. When its hot in the jungle of peace I go swimming in the ocean of love.....

One other comment worth mentioning... The consortium includes Dubai Ports. which is interesting in that there is mention of Israeli company talking.
As for Jamaican government running it.....they cant run the JPS.....or any of the numerous hotels took over...the debacle. Of highway 2000.....
Wait till expats start coming in.......
I still am not convinced it will happen.... Who remebers the promise of non traditional exports..... CBI ...horticulture.... Dehydrated fruit.....microdams.....all our previous saviours....
I still think this is smoke less substantial.

Why don't they tell and why Goat Islands?
Why don't the Jamaica Government rule all further industrial development on our Barriers Islands and Reefs off limits?
