Don't faint. Don't know if you caught this episode. She was bright, articulate, practical, LOTS of sense, and not one bit fluffy. Must have been a bit hard on the Black real estate agent though. I liked her too.

Anyway, she is a refreshing change from the usual airheads.

I wonder if her boyfriend is a Jamaican who has been raised in the USA. He has made a good choice.

Sometimes renting is a sound strategy. He picked the most affordable option which will allow him to save more. I notice Jamaicans are in a hurry to run out and buy house. It's part of the culture. I am one of the few who hasn't done that. There are other priorities like travel, sending your child to private school, exploring the arts, and enjoying a range of professional development and recreational activities.

Why get saddled with a house and all the pressure that entails too early? I agree with her.

Save your money. Build up an emergency fund as once you buy a house, so many things need to be repaired and THEN buy a house.


I guess I got spooked as at the time when I considered buying a house, the economy collapsed and I saw so many families from the Caribbean just have to hand in the keys as they couldn't pay the mortgage.

What is this thing about Jamaicans and buying house? Someone break it down for me.

I remember when I moved to Toronto an older cousin told me go out and buy a house as soon as possible even if you have to sleep on the floor. She was always giving me what for for not taking her advice. Also, my in-laws were always on my case "Stop travel up and dung and save up your money fe buy one 'ouse". I am so glad I didn't do it. When I got divorced, I would have had to hand half of it over to my ex.

I have a close friend who brings this up too and we end up in shouting match. I've known her just about all my life though so we are still friends but we don't agree on this.

Russians are the same btw. However, their priority is to buy a house as soon as possible, rent it out and use the surplus income to save for their retirement.

None of the properties the real estate agent showed them were rental properties. If he could have afforded a house with a rental unit (e.g. he lives on one level and the tenant lives on another), I grant you that would have been the best investment...but only if it was within his budget.

Still he can take the $500-$600 a month he is saving by going with the cheapest rental option...which he did based on the advice of his blonde girlfriend....and save up to make a bigger down payment on a house in couple of years.

My cousin and my in-laws never advised me to get a rental property when I was starting out. Just "buy one house".

Do you agree with the advice "Buy a house even if you can't afford furniture and have to sleep on the floor". I am sure she didn't mean that literally but you get my drift.

So the bottom line is that you don't think this blonde girlfriend is sensible at all and you thin the brother is a weak sellout.

What do you think of his accent? Think there is some Caribbean influence there? As a matter of fact, one could say the same thing about the real estate agent.
