I am so glad that the filmmaker interviewed Malcolm Gladwell's mother and aunt for this film and also travelled to Jamaica and filmed part of it there to expose Jamaica's disgraceful attitudes about colour and shade to the world. This is another example of the crabbin' that goes on.

Breaking down the colour spectrum: Documentary examines global prejudice based on skin colour

Hue: A Matter of Colour, directed by Vic Sarin, is a poignant documentary that weaves the personal and global issues stemming from colourism with eloquent ease.
The film defines colourism with a quotation from Alice Walker, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Colour Purple, who calls it a “prejudicial or preferential treatment of same-race people based solely on their colour.”

Personal meets global

Right at the outset, Sarin frames the film’s globe-trekking journey with his own personal experience of struggle with colour consciousness. Born and raised in India, but having subsequently lived in Australia and Canada, Sarin immediately establishes an intimate stance with his interviewees and viewers alike.

“Since I was a young man, I’ve always felt as an outsider, and looking back, there is a connection between my behaviour and my upbringing within a colour conscious society,” narrates Sarin at the opening of the film, as he prepares to take his family to Brazil – a place whose vibrant ethnic mix he finds greatly reassuring.
By being transparent about struggling with his own identity, Sarin makes it clear that this documentary is not about detached observation, but rather a film that seamlessly combines his personal story with those of people sharing similar trials.
The documentary examines how people of the same race, ethnicity, and even from the same family, can abuse or treat one another differently based on skin colour.
Sarin intercuts the stories of the film’s protagonists in a manner that establishes a dialogue between them, while still maintaining the integrity of their individual voices.

Joyce Gladwell, a Jamaican-born author living in Ontario, declares that while observing the differences in colour is perhaps inevitable, classifying people based on those observations is what is unacceptable.

She said a lot more than that.

Sapna Abraham and Kavita Emmanuel of Women of Worth, an organization that fights for social acceptance of women of all colours in India, bring our attention to the fact that women of darker hue face a particularly strong prejudice in India and, for example, often have great difficulty marrying.Colour-coded identities
Though the film devotes a lot of attention to describing colour prejudice as a corrosive social belief, many of its most poignant moments suggest that colourism is perhaps the most damaging and lasting when internalized.
Eva Abrahams, a South African minister and herself a woman of colour, discusses the apartheid legacy that she is fighting to eradicate, yet admits her own complicity in prejudice by sharing that she unconsciously discriminated against her own sister who was of a much darker colour.
The ability of the film’s protagonists to draw highly personal links between colourism as a social prejudice and a painful personal blueprint is also evident in the film’s controversial figure Elvie Pineda. The self-made tycoon, who made her fortune selling skin whitening products in her native Philippines, is candid about the brutal bullying that she underwent as a child because of her dark skin.

What is striking about Pineda is that despite continuing to make a profit out of feeding the obsession with white skin amongst Asian women, she admits that, despite having whitened her own face, she still loves and misses her natural colour. Pineda’s honesty in admitting that her business ethic is solely motivated by money, even though it contradicts her personal beliefs, is both refreshing and troubling.

The film’s most heartbreaking moments are also the most ironic ones. While depicting the plight of children born with albinism in Tanzania, who are murdered because of the superstition that potions made out of their organs have healing properties, Sarin muses on how even when whiteness is discriminated against, in a morbid way, it is still valorized.

Despite exposing the devastation of colour-motivated prejudice, most of the film’s protagonists are optimistic about growing positive change.
“I think there is a new generation of young people who are coming forward not thinking along in terms of colour,” muses Sapna Abraham.
It is this kind of hope interspersed with a fearless examination of prejudice that makes Hue: A Matter of Colour a must-see at this year’s Vancouver International Film Festival.

I approach documentaries with caution. Objective presentation of fact or biased emotional manipulation? With no agenda beyond reconciling his own troubled heart, acclaimed Canadian cinematographer Vic Sarin has won this skeptic over with his masterwork.

The Filipina founder of a skin-whitening empire. A South African Minister, a Jamaican writer, a Brazilian street-sweeper – And even Sarin himself. The common thread is that all bear the legacy of “colourism” – discrimination within one’s own race based on relative skin shade. Most heartbreaking of all is the plight of Tanzanian albino children, under constant threat of murder.
Although the stories are grim, Sarin never stoops to easy answers or finger-pointing. And his message is ultimately one of empowerment and hope. This real-life “Most Interesting Man in the World” recounts his childhood in India, where “shades of brown” dictate social standing. He takes full ownership for confronting his own demons, and educating his children’s generation.
With compassion he draws out the whole story, both good and bad, from each interviewee. When chronicling the animal world, David Attenborough was objective – Be it a delicate dragonfly, or a lion tearing apart its prey. Sarin applies the same journalistic integrity to his study of human behaviour. Crouching in the proverbial shrubs of society, he points the lens in all directions, including inwards.
The best documentary I’ve ever seen, Hue: A Matter of Colour is a profound examination of race and identity around the world. A call to examine ourselves and build a better future.

It is not easy to get direct and short answers from author Malcolm Gladwell given his expansive, curious and exploratory mind. On questions of race and class he will take an interviewer on a broad journey of both issues, from slavery economies to post-slavery conditions around the world.

This is typical of the New York Times bestselling author for who more than 800 persons packed into the Toronto Reference Library to hear his conversations with Eleanor Wachtel, host of “Writers and Company” on CBC Radio One. The interview will be broadcast on Sunday, June 10 at 2pm on the Canadian national broadcaster.

The event was part of the series of events organized by the Jamaica 50 Celebration Inc. to celebrate Jamaica’s 50th anniversary of Independence in Toronto. With his parents, UK-born Prof. Graham Gladwell and Jamaica-born Joyce Gladwell, sitting in the front row, The New Yorker staff writer was asked about his family and told the story about his mother’s upbringing in Jamaica, tracing his family’s oral and DNA history back to the Igbo of Nigeria. He said he and his mother are descendants of the mistress of a slave owner and the offsprings of that union were granted certain privileges that are sustained and accentuated over years. “It’s an odd thought to think that you owe your privileges to rape.” He said this points to the arbitrariness of privilege. “People who are privileged like to pretend that there is some logic to their success, that they got there because of their own virtue and from hard work but, in fact, if you begin to poke around, you’ll find that there is no logic at all, it is a series of events that led to your position.

It is a reminder that we ought to have some humility.” His mother’s memoir, Brown Face, Big Master, is a recounting of her childhood in the 1930s when Jamaica was becoming a country, “on the cusp of its independence,” noted Gladwell.

He said in Jamaica, unlike in the United States, if one were mulatto, he was granted, not full, but at least a healthy portion of privileges of full citizenship. Whereas in America if he were considered black - the ‘one drop rule.’ “If they could find a smidgen of black in you then you were black.” He said it was the reverse in Jamaica “because there was a shortage of white people so the bar for whiteness started to fall.” He described the education his mother and her twin sister received at St. Hilda’s High School as being very fine but problematic.

“A series of high Victorian white women from England descend on Jamaica and teach Jamaicans how to be English women,” causing invariably cognitive dissonance.

He said the British had an” extraordinary self regard that perhaps we will be better off if we just behave like Englishmen.” In his book, Outliers: The Story of Success, he tells the story of the serendipitous moments in his mother’s history which led to her success.

IMMIGRATION Gladwell said he has an immigrant connection to Jamaica, similarly to England where he was born and Canada where he grew up. “Immigrants have complex relationships to the places they leave.

In a morally problematic sense, he said that by virtue of leaving a country an immigrant changes not just the country they come to but they change the country they leave. “We always talk about how immigrants change the country they go by virtue of their absence, they leave a mark.” He said enormous numbers of middle class people left Jamaica - his family among them — Jamaica lost its educated, its professional class to Miami, New York, Toronto and London” noted Gladwell.

He said immigrants also help to preserve the country that they came from. “Who leaves a country? People who are most unhappy with a country so, if the country that you’re leaving is actually functional and you leave because you’re unhappy with it its functionality, you’re doing your country a favour.” Gladwell said he decided to move to the United States after visiting the country when he was in college and he felt that it was a more open place than Canada, especially Washington DC, which he said at the time was “run by 25-year-olds.” He was appointed to the Order of Canada in June 2011.

Diverse He said his mixed race was never an issue in Canada. He grew up in Elmira, Ontario, a strongly Mennonite community and then went to Trinity College, University of Toronto, which was so “effortlessly diverse” that he didn’t remotely stand out.” He said it wasn’t until he moved to America that he realised the big deal that Americans made out of race. He described the American racial experience as very toxic.

“You cannot enslave 10 per cent or 15 per cent of your population for a hundred years or more and expect that stain to be removed easily.” Gladwell’s latest project is a book about power in which he explores the contentions between the powerful and the powerless. It is a discussion of what happens to people when they get power. A former business and science reporter at the Washington Post, he is the author of The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference, Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking and What the Dog Saw: And Other Adventures.

Jamaica society of 1930 is not Jamaica 1960 or Jamaica 2014..So too much quantum moments of history seperates these eras much greater than 1834 and 1930....Jamaica had revolutionary social changes..the 38 riots, Federation, self government, the race riots of 1967, recognition and impact of Garvey, evolution of Rasta, independence, Norman Manley and fifty years of political independence, evolution of musical systems and its anti cuøtural hegemonic influence, the change in the postindependence education system, migration paterns, .. 1930 Jamaica had more in common with 1930 Guyana than 2014 Jamaica has with 2014 Guyana.. different social evolution paths..

Jamaica relationship with race is more nuanced than Kanada...different history, different influences..

Gladwell is wrong; people who leave a country is not simply the functionality: more people migrate for economic reasons than functionality... both at the bottom out of desperation and aspiration and at top end of the economic strata... And more people move for sex....

My thought is that migrants preserve the culture ossified at the societies that they left... but societies evolve, just as Jamaica is different from his mothers Jamaica... teh first generation not those that leave but those that are socialized in the metropole society have a skewered veiw of their parents country, based partially on their parents narrative and that of their own society cultural drivers ...Looking at the Jamaica that Colin Powel and Gladwell is proof of this....
