Question for People Who Really Know Kingston - Downtown

this is the kind of view that cause people in Jamaica to resent working with "farin minded" people you think you have all the solutions.

again i challenge you to give me an example of one poor country who has taken advantage of this kind of funding to revitalize and inner city community successfully .

This is not about urban renewal. The purpose of the funding is not to re-vitalize inner city communities. It is to restore areas and buildings that are of historical significance.

Parts of Port Royal would qualify and so would parts of downtown Kingston.

Next time you are in jamaica head down to that area after dusk ......

U forget Jamaica tried regeneration...urban development commission...didn't trench town come out of one of those plans in the 50s...

And one proud jamaican who love the culture of black people did a redevelopment program and relocation program named after a urban cebnter in Copenhagen...its called Tivoli gardens....

It is not my job to do this research. I am not being paid to track this down. I wasn't looking for it and even I have stumbled across this type of information. Surely those who are being paid to work for the Jamaica National Heritage Trust could track it down if they really wanted to.

that is 20% of the organization entire budget on an ongoing basis to one small country?

one of the big issue faces everywhere is ownership of heritage property and what the owners want to do with it..that is what that building at the corner of yonge st and gould st was burned down . city did not want to let the owner do what he wanted to do

Do I look like a building contractor to you? I have no idea what it would costs to restore the buildings. The bottom line is you never know until you try.

Kingston Restoration Foundation (KRC)

The KRC was formed in response to the dramatic economic and social deterioration of the downtown area of Kingston in the mid 1970s and early 1980s. This deterioration was a consequence of the numerous fires and riots that plagued the city, as a result of which many businesses migrated from the area.
As a result the Inner Kingston Development Project was born. This was a ten year urban economic and physical development initiative, which began in July 1986. It was designed to revitalize Kingston, Jamaica’s downtown core and provide work space for economic growth and job generation. The two principal implementing agencies were the Kingston Restoration Company Limited and the Urban Development Corporation, the primary developmental parastatal organization of the Government of Jamaica with USAID being the funding agency.
The goal of the project was to reverse the negative economic trends and disinvestment that had been occurring downtown since the mid 1970s and contributed to Jamaica’s need for increased private investment and employment opportunities. The rationale in 1986 for focusing the Project on Inner Kingston was threefold: (1) it had the highest rate of unemployment in the area, (2) reversing its deterioration would help to rekindle investment expectations nationwide and (3) the area offered significant opportunities for cost savings in development because infrastructure systems were in place and vacant building shells could be rehabilitated and put to productive use economically.

Perhaps I need to apply for a job with them, track down sources of funding and do some fundraising.

Again y waste money on kill some?....a lot of those buildings are not fit for any modern purpose....Kingston is a commercial city that needs uliterian functional buildings...restoration of killsome buildings is not sustainable... This is why there has never been the drive to do it.'..

Better investment is restore Black River..more sustainable... A growing tourist region with small hotels to the east and negril an hour drive to the west..... Better return on investment better, state of repair, better original feature better chance of it attracting amdisney crowd... All those angst feelings about the Zong....
