I get people begging money every time I go Mobay, Kingston, Ochie. Wonder which part him deh? Then I think that many need to get rid of the hand out mentality. I not saying everybody have it, but I've learned you want a better life, you have to work your tail off for it. And even then, one person can ruin it for you so you have to start over again.

Yes....I too hate the "hand out mentality" but how do you suggest we pass on some new coping skills to the next generation of poor people children?
Because in the ghetto they are learning to either "beg yu a money" or "jook yu down" personally I prefer "dem beg me a money"

Ahhh, di million dolla question, lol. Personally, I don't think there is a single answer because everybody's situation, while it might look the same, is always different. One of the things I noticed is the adults. I believe I have already posted on here about the one time I did volunteer work during Christmas for some inner city kids. The attitude from the adults was like I owed it to them. Never mind that at the time I was working two full time jobs where sleep was an option. I did that for three years. When I finally quit one, it was like didn't know what to do with the free time. I've found my niche for volunteering though and that is with special kids. The adults there are much more appreciative of what I do for both them and the kids. A simple thank you is all I need, then I thank them for allowing me to give back.

About protecting oneself, well, where I live, I'm allowed 'tools' to defend myself and I'm also learning Aikido. Since I no longer carry cash, begging me for money isn't going to do any good. Like today, some kid wanted ten cents to pay fi him dinna. Nobody in the place had cash. Everybody using card to pay.

Now if we look at history with some of the dictators. Some of them handed out to the poor so they then became 'heroes' of sorts. The poor depended on these hand outs for whatever...buy school uniforms, food, etc. Now bring in the 'dons' in some of the areas of JA, where they are doing the same thing with drug money and the cycle continues. To the people in those parts, an honest day's work for an honest day's may not work for them, so they do what they have to do which includes the illegal stuff and the cycle continues again. So I answer the question with a question...is it really MY ting to get these people out of that situation? I'm not so sure about that.

A high-ranking World Bank official is charging that Jamaicans are too individualistic.


Giorgio Valentini, World Bank Country Representative for Jamaica, Guyana, Trindad and Tobago and Suriname, told The Gleaner the insular approach adopted over the years, has helped to plunge the country into the economic crisis in which it has found itself from the successes of 40 years ago.


Valentini said Jamaica possesses the capacity to forge ahead successfully with the proposed logistics hub that could catapult the country out of its bind, but stressed that embedded insularity must go.


He argued that Jamaicans have never actually been pushed to the brink. "They have had it easy ... ; you never see uprisings; you see very few beggars on the streets," he said. "I could be wrong, but Jamaicans have never really seen the pressure to do something to make it happen."


Added Valentini: "The question being asked is, can Jamaica become one of the five or six major logistics hubs in the world, of the many competing hubs in the world? But I say, look at Singapore and Dubai today, nobody would have (thought they would have) been among the top logistic hubs in the world," declared Valentini in an exit interview with Gleaner.

Pointing to the heavy focus on crime levels, Valentini suggested that Jamaicans tended to be too harsh on themselves in some respects.


He expressed concern that after languishing for more than 40 years in the throes of an ailing economy, Jamaicans are also losing patience with the direction being undertaken by the current Finance Minister Dr Peter Phillips.


In achieving small measures of economic growth, among other things, Valentini suggested that Jamaica was fortunate to be moving in the reverse direction to many nations who have found themselves in similar predicament.


"Jamaica is going against the current. You are going through a harsh, challenging period; you are implementing a large number of structural reforms but you are growing, and that is a signal that something works," he argued.


Learn to think global


He said the attitude of Jamaicans has been influenced by its closeness and reliance on what he termed the Euro Diaspora, to the United States. "So everybody has the option to move to the US," he asserted.


"There is no doubt that Jamaica does not lack the capacity to forge ahead, but they must learn to think global instead of local," he asserted. "The question must be probed, how can we partner with global companies instead of focusing on 2.7 million people in a limited market."


Valentini who is leaving the local posting for Honduras next month, suggested that 40 years ago, Singapore was constrained as one of the poorest countries in the world. "They (the people of Singapore) had to push themselves to get out of that."


He also pointed to Dubai which does not have a geographic advantage.


Valentini said the individualistic approach of Jamaicans is magnified in the tourism and farming sectors in Jamaica. He charged that individual interests would do anything to selfishly advance their area over another, instead of focusing on the famed Jamaica brand.


He suggested that instead of 250,000 farmers doing their own thing, the structure must be set up to create a more cohesive approach to play a bigger role in the global space.


Citing Digicel, Grace-Kennedy and Mussons Jamaica Limited as examples to follow, Valentini stressed that Jamaicans will have to learn to participate with more cohesiveness. "Few are doing well, but so much more can be done," he said.

the obvious answer would be the gov't...via the education system...
unless some strongman emerges to challenge the corrupt/inept gov't---which is not gonna happen...
obviously the gov't has little interest in the poor people and j-a is under s kind of american/western-european value system...mainly through mis-leadership by pnp-jlp & hypnosis by hollyweird propaganda

these organizations have their place but ultimately it is the gov't that has the monopoly on force & public policy since the dawn of j-a's fake independence from britain...
where there is no vision the people perish...it is clear j-a's gov't has no vision or plan other than to beg for more money from expats, imf, china, whoever---

in my opinion it will take a movement bold enough to act and harness enough people into an organization powerful enough to get the gov'ts attention...with progressive leadership enlightened enough to see beyond the fanatical adherence to western-european standards of what "civilization" means
