Even in a time when technology allows us to connect instantly with almost anyone on earth, there is no substitute for a father's presence, care, and support. On Father's Day, we show our gratitude to the men who show us how to learn, grow, and live.

With encouragement and unconditional love, fathers guide their children and help them envision brighter futures. They are teachers and coaches, friends and role models. They instill values like hard work and integrity, and teach their kids to take responsibility for themselves and those around them. This is a task for every father -- whether married or single, gay or straight, natural or adoptive -- and every child deserves someone who will step up and fill this role. My Administration proudly supports dads who are not only present but also involved, who meet their commitments to their sons and daughters, even if their own fathers did not.

Today, let us reflect on our fathers' essential contributions to our lives, our society, and our Nation. Let us thank the men who understand there is nothing more important than being the best fathers they can be.

Obama’s Father’s Day Criticism of Dads Misses Mark




President Obama marked Father's Day 2008 and 2007 by calling attention to the importance of fathers and the damage caused by their absence. He also placed the blame for fatherlessness squarely on men, saying father absence is caused by fathers who have "abandoned their responsibilities, acting like boys instead of men."

Obama is correct that involved fathers--even divorced or separated ones with little income--provide their children with substantial benefits. A recent Boston College study of low-income minority families found that when nonresident fathers are involved in their adolescent children's lives, the incidence of substance abuse, violence, crime, and truancy decreases markedly. Lead author professor Rebekah Levine Coley, says the study found involved nonresident fathers to be "an important protective factor for adolescents."

Dr. Perry Crouch, a gang intervention specialist in South-Central Los Angeles, negotiates peace treaties between warring gangs. When asked recently how many of the gang members he deals with have fathers in their lives, he replied "About half of one percent."

Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox has examined hundreds of pre-sentencing reports detailing the family histories of convicted criminals, and found one common denominator--"Uniformly, there was a parent, usually the father, missing from the home."

Approximately 750,000 teenagers become pregnant each year, and 3 in 10 teenage girls become pregnant at least once before age 20. MSNBC health and science writer Linda Carroll, describing a new Coley/Boston College study on teen pregnancy, explains:

"When it comes to preventing risky teen sex, there may be no better deterrent than a doting dad. Teenagers whose fathers are more involved in their lives are less likely to engage in risky sexual activities such as unprotected intercourse, according to a new study...While an involved mother can also help stave off a teen's sexual activity, dads have twice the influence."

Fathers and educational performance are also strongly linked. In Growing Up With a Single Parent: What Hurts, What Helps, sociologists Sara McLanahan and Gary Sandefur analyzed data from five different studies. They concluded that boys and girls of single parent families are more than twice as likely to drop out of high school as their peers with two parents. They're also less likely to go to college if they do finish high school, and more likely to be both out of school and out of work.

Obama is correct that kids need their fathers. However, he makes a serious and harmful error in placing all blame for family breakdown on men. Family courts, child welfare agencies and mothers themselves often erect barriers to father involvement that even the most devoted fathers sometimes can't overcome.

For example, Professors Kathryn Edin of Harvard and Timothy Nelson of the University of Pennsylvania recently conducted a study of low-income, unmarried fathers and found that most strive to be good parents, and are often thwarted by the children's mothers' interference.



Edin's subsequent research analyzes data from the large-scale Fragile Families & Child Wellbeing study and reaches similar conclusions. For example, she found that when a mother moves on to have new partners, her actions are "strongly associated with increases in the probability that the biological father will have no contact with his child." Contrary to anti-father stereotypes, when fathers move on to have subsequent romantic partners and children, they largely retain their desire to be in their original children's lives. According to Edin:

"[T]he evidence points more strongly to the role of mothers 'swapping daddies' than it does to the role of fathers 'swapping kids.'"

Edin also found that mothers' and fathers' subsequent partners often interfere with father involvement. Dad may be kept away because his presence makes mom's current partner jealous. Similarly, dad's new partner may pressure him to spend his time and resources on her and the child they have together, as opposed to his child with his former partner.

Moreover, according to Edin, a mother's new partnership "may provide strong motivation [for her] to put the new partner in the 'daddy' role." The biological father is then less likely to be involved because the mother is more likely to exclude him and/or because he may feel he's now redundant.

In broken families, when a mother does not want her children's father around anymore, she can usually push him out. Family courts tilt heavily towards mothers in awarding custody, and often fail to enforce fathers' visitation rights. In most states, mothers are able to move their children hundreds or thousands of miles away from their fathers, often permanently destroying the fathers' bonds with their children.

Moreover, women are increasingly having children with no intention of ever having a father in their kids' lives. Newly-released data from the National Center for Health Statistics show that 40% of children born in the United States are born out of wedlock, a 26% increase from just five years ago. Even if a couple is cohabiting at the time of the child's birth, three in 10 will split up within only two years.

The child welfare system also pushes fathers away from their children. When a child welfare agency removes children from a single mother's home for abuse or neglect, an offer of placement to the father, barring unfitness, should be automatic. Yet the Urban Institute report What About the Dads? contains a shocking finding: even when fathers inform child welfare officials that they would like their children to live with them, the agencies seek to place the children with their fathers in only a small percentage of cases. The children are instead pushed into the foster care system.

The explosion of divorce, out of wedlock births, and post-break-up father absence has greatly harmed our children. This tragedy has largely been blamed on fathers. While fathers do deserve some blame, mothers and the family law and child welfare systems have also done much to separate children from the fathers they love and need.

Dads are Getting Mixed Messages as Gender Roles Shift

Seeing that Father’s Day is right around the corner, I’d like to get a few things off my chest regarding dads.

Fatherhood is a hot topic lately, because – ironically enough -- mothers are making big news. With visionaries the likes of Sheryl Sandberg encouraging women to “Lean In,” women are winning the day across the board. Hanna Rosin’s 2010 piece “The End of Men” in The Atlantic painted a damning picture for modern-day men, citing the fact that women outnumber men in the workforce, are earning college degrees at a faster pace than men, and cast men as an antiquated gender that has failed to adapt to social and economic changes. And a new Pew Research study was released last week that showed women are now the breadwinners in 40% of American households.

To the credit of fathers, many dads are starting to see the light. With women reentering the workforce in record numbers, men are stepping up on the home front. In fact, the number of stay-at-home fathers has more than doubled in the last decade, with nearly 200,000 men filling the role of primary caregiver, according to U.S. Census figures.

Also, the Boston College Center for Work and Family has been studying fathers since 2010. The findings show a generation of men who are choosing to take on an added level of involvement than past generations. That’s why 65% of men surveyed think childcare and household tasks should be divided equally between men and women, and 77% of men seek ways to spend more time with their kids on a daily basis. Men 2.0 are diaper-changing, housecleaning guys who are no longer stressing about being the breadwinner, but about how to address work/life struggles so they can make it to tee-ball on time.

But despite clarion calls for involved fathers and statistics that prove kids with involved dads have enhanced cognitive abilities, stay in school, have increased self-confidence, wait longer to have sex for the first time and are less likely to be depressed, not everyone is pleased about this shift nor are they convinced dads are capable parents.

Of those polled in the Pew Research study, 51% said they believe a child is better off with a mother staying at home. But that number drops to 8% if a dad takes on the same role. Curious, isn’t it?

My son is 5 years old and I was his primary caregiver for the first couple years of his life, while my breadwinner wife provided for us as a bank manager. I did the dropping off and picking up at daycare, took him to the majority of doctor appointments, attended most of the play dates, and spent a lot of time taking him to playgrounds. And during that time, I can’t tell you the number of things that occurred which led me to the unmistakable conclusion that far too many people believe dads are second-class parents.

People asked me if I was “babysitting,” to which I not-so-politely replied no. I’m parenting. It’s impossible to babysit your own child. While performing the simple task of changing a diaper, I’ve had women come up to me and offer to do it for me – because surely a man doesn’t know how. If my son had a crying fit in public, people would come over to soothe him and say “Ohhhh, don’t worry sweetie. Mommy will be home soon.” And don’t get me started on the unfair criticism stay-at-home fathers face from people who think they’re lazy freeloaders.

And I’m not alone. The hundreds of fathers in my various dad groups both online and in-person have similar stories. There really is the mistaken belief that women have the parenting manual automatically and biologically imprinted into their DNA, while dads walk around dumbfounded just waiting to play golf. That sentiment is no doubt solidified by the countless TV shows and commercials that portray fathers as clueless morons who need mom to clean up our mess AND the kids’ messes.

But the only cluelessness on the part of fathers at the moment is confusion about what we can do to win some approval and appreciation.

More men are bucking traditional gender roles to take on additional duties at home, only to be criticized for not earning their keep. More men are becoming stay-at-home dads so their wives can go back to work, except few people believe men are capable of caring for their kids. If men work full-time we hear we’re not spending enough time at home, but if we commit to being at home full-time we’re contributing to the “disintegration of marriage” and causing “society to dissolve around us.”

Talk about mixed messages.

Women and men are equally clueless when they become parents for the first time. People have to learn to be a parent, it’s not a flip that’s automatically switched in one gender or the other. Men are just as capable of taking care of kids as women, just like women are equally capable of succeeding in the workforce. Both should be encouraged as society evolves and we strive to do what’s best for our own families.

So this Father’s Day, let’s not condemn a generation of men who have made it a priority not to be absentee parents.

Obama Goes After Black Fathers Again


Fatherhood in black culture is laced with explosives. President Barack Obama seems to have a taste for pyrotechnics.

On Friday, he hit his old Chicago stomping grounds to speak at Hyde Park Academy. The hot button issue in the Chi these days continue to be guns and violence, but Obama didn’t spend much time on gun chatter to this group. He talked about fathers in black communities.

“For a lot of young boys and young men in particular, they don’t see an example of fathers or grandfathers, uncles, who are in a position to support families and be held up in respect,” Obama said. “And so that means that this is not just a gun issue; it’s also an issue of the kinds of communities that we’re building.”

OK, well, he didn’t single out “black fathers.” He merely spoke to a school resplendent with brown faces about absentee fathers underpinning the urban dysfunction in their neighborhoods.

It was pointed and unmistakable. It was redundant.

This isn’t the first time Obama has taken black men to task. At a Father’s Day speech in 2008, again in Chicago’s South Side, he bore into them again:

“Too many fathers are M.I.A, too many fathers are AWOL, missing from too many lives and too many homes,” Mr. Obama said, to a chorus of approving murmurs from the audience. “They have abandoned their responsibilities, acting like boys instead of men. And the foundations of our families are weaker because of it.”

Cool, no problem there. Then it got interesting:

“I know how hard it is to get kids to eat properly,” Mr. Obama said. “But I also know that folks are letting our children drink eight sodas a day, which some parents do, or, you know, eat a bag of potato chips for lunch. Buy a little desk or put that child at the kitchen table. Watch them do their homework.”

Bill Cosby undoubtedly smiled. So did the mostly black church audience that day. It’s a familiar trope: Put the heat on the individual, espousing the bootstrap, making the story easier to swallow and the real issues of poverty, systemic decay ignored.

It’s one thing to promote fatherhood and community in the context of overcoming and pushing for riddance of systemic ills. It’s another to sell the merits of dads as panacea. That’s irresponsible.

Black and white fathers abandon their children, yet I’d be hard-pressed to imagine a speech like this given to children living in Newtown, Conn. Statistics are often reported to justify this strategy, but one side doesn’t have a monopoly on favorable statistics.

In 2007, a study conducted by Boston University reported that black fathers who don’t reside in the home are more likely to sustain regular contact with their children than fathers of any other group. This isn’t to exonerate black men who neglect their duties, but to emphasize how collective the issue is.

More engaging fathers is only one hurdle. There are still other more daunting obstacles (public education, job attrition, rising college tuition) that stand in the way of reversing urban decline and building sustainable models of success.

It’s more than fathers who are failing children. How are guns flowing through our areas? How are guns getting in the hands of our youth? It ain’t Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Obama’s speech went against an accepted narrative about his political roots, that he was familiar with his old base in Chicago’s South Side. That since he made his political bones there, he has insight where others don’t.

His continuation of the hackneyed black pathology rhetoric of his political predecessors is more than disappointing. It’s a sobering reminder that when it comes to uprooting the ills of urban black America, the leadership in this country still lacks a clue.

Ad of the Day: Dad Has the World's Toughest Job, Too, and It's Nothing Like Mom's
American Greetings does a Father's Day version By Tim Nudd

For Mother's Day, American Greetings and ad agency Mullen produced one of the year's big viral advertising successes, "World's Toughest Job," in which real people interviewed for a hellish-sounding position that promised endless work and zero pay—and when they objected, they were reminded that moms do it every day.

By and large, people fell in love with the spot. (The YouTube video has more than 20 million views.) But if there was one quiet yet constant (and frankly, annoying) criticism from certain circles, it was this: What about Dad? He has a tough job, too.

Well, with Father's Day almost here, American Greetings throws dads a bone (sort of) with a "World's Toughest Job" sequel. Like the original, it uses real people. But it has quite a different tone (at least until the very end) and puts a clever spin on what "World's Toughest Job" means for fathers compared to mothers.

The basic message: There is no script for being a good dad.

The video is funny, and at times heartfelt. But while it clearly celebrates fathers, it's not entirely complimentary to them. So, will dads appreciate it, or will some feel slighted once again? Watch below, and tell us what you think.

Why, you may ask, do we do this?

Because for so long, conversations heard around the topic have only been, “they are nowhere to be found.” In fact, a number of studies and reports claim that black fathers are overwhelmingly absent from the home.

The Myth Of The Absent Black Father

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently published new data on the role that American fathers play in parenting their children. Most of the CDC’s previous research on family life — which the agency explores as an important contributor to public health and child development — has focused exclusively on mothers. But the latest data finds that the stereotypical gender imbalance in this area doesn’t hold true, and dads are just as hands-on when it comes to raising their kids.

That includes African-American fathers.

In fact, in its coverage of the study, the Los Angeles Times noted that the results “defy stereotypes about black fatherhood” because the CDC found that black dads are more involved with their kids on a daily basis than dads from other racial groups:





In some cases, the differences between black fathers and white or Latino fathers weren’t statistically significant. Nonetheless, the fact that there’s no dramatic drop-off for African-American fathers is still a surprising revelation for some people.

Considering the fact that “black fatherhood” is a phrase that is almost always accompanied by the word “crisis” in U.S. society, it’s understandable that the CDC’s results seem innovative. But in reality, the new data builds upon years of research that’s concluded that hands-on parenting is similar among dads of all races. There’s plenty of scientific evidence to bust this racially-biased myth.

The Pew Research Center, which has tracked this data for years, consistently finds no big differences between white and black fathers. Gretchen Livingston, one of the senior researchers studying family life at Pew, wasn’t at all surprised by the new CDC data. “Blacks look a lot like everyone else,” she pointed out.

Although black fathers are more likely to live separately from their children — the statistic that’s usually trotted out to prove the parenting “crisis” — many of them remain just as involved in their kids’ lives. Pew estimates that 67 percent of black dads who don’t live with their kids see them at least once a month, compared to 59 percent of white dads and just 32 percent of Hispanic dads.

And there’s compelling evidence that number of black dads living apart from their kids stems from structural systems of inequality and poverty, not the unfounded assumption that African-American men somehow place less value on parenting. Equal numbers of black dads and white dads tend to agree that it’s important to be a father who provides emotional support, discipline, and moral guidance. There’s one area of divergence in the way the two groups approach their parental responsibilities: Black dads are even more likely to think it’s important to financially provide for their children.

Dr. Roberta L. Coles, a sociology professor at Marquette University, has also researched black fathers for nearly a decade. Her most well-known work includes The Best Kept Secret: Single Black Fathers and The Myth of the Missing Black Father: The Persistence of Black Fatherhood in America. Like Pew, Coles has also found that even though black dads may be less likely to marry their kids’ mothers, they typically remain involved in raising their children.

In an interview with the Grio this week, Coles explained that she’s invested in continuing to challenge the prevailing stereotypes in this area. “It’s important to get it out there that that’s not the whole picture,” Coles noted. “People need to know there are men out there trying to do their best.”

That’s the same reason that Kenrya Rankin Naasel recently published Bet On Black, a collection of essays in which African-American women share their stories of being raised by great fathers. “For years, we’ve all been bombarded with statistics that scream our men are not up to the important task of fathering,” she explained in an interview with BET about her project. “Ultimately, I hope that Bet On Black challenges the rhetoric about our families and changes the conversation to one that celebrates rather than denigrates.”

Despite the concrete evidence to dispel the prevailing assumptions about black dads, the conversation is still dominated by headlines like “What’s the Problem with Black Fathers?” and “Who’s Your Daddy: The Epidemic Of Absent Black Fathers.” President Obama has drawn some criticism for repeatedly delivering speeches about the importance of fatherhood to nonwhite audiences. And this past fall, when Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson’s two-year-old son tragically passed away, the media wasted no time falling back on all the stereotypes about irresponsible black dads.

The resistance to the research in the field may speak to the fact that racially-motivated stereotypes are particularly hard to break out of. For instance, despite the wealth of evidence disproving Americans’ assumptions about welfare recipients, the deeply-ingrained myth of the “welfare queen” remains.
