First images of planets orbiting other stars

[Boricua_papi]

A ~8 Jupiter mass planet orbiting star 1RXS J160929.1-210524 which is located ~ 500 light years away. Image obtained using the Gemini North Telescope located at Mauna Kea, HI which employs state-of-the-art adaptive optic systems that for compensate atmospheric turbulence and temperature effects that induce localized changes in refractivity.

It is unlikely that a gas giant planet ~8 times more massive than Jupiter could provide conditions suitable for the development of biological chemistry and life. To begin with, this planet would have no solid surface and its atmosphere would likely contain mostly hydrogen and helium in conditions that tend to reduce complex organic molecules into simpler forms.
