There was chaos in Half-Way-Tree Saturday afternoon when gunmen tried to pull off a daring daylight robbery in the heart of the busy thoroughfare.

Gunshots rang out when gunmen tried to rob a popular betting shop in Half-Way-Tree Square.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Two men, including a licensed firearm holder, were shot in the incident</span> which brought Half-Way-Tree Square to a standstill.

Patrons were in the Track Price betting shop shortly after 1pm, when two men entered, pulled guns and demanded money.

One eyewitness told RJR News it was chaos shortly after as gunshots rang out.

Patrons took cover as the men began firing.

Shoppers and motorists who heard the gunshots also took evasive action.

It was then discovered that the licensed firearm holder and another patron had been shot.

The gunmen escaped.

Detectives from the St Andrew Central Police Division have launched a manhunt for the gunmen.

Education Minister Andrew Holness has described the spate of attacks on the nation's children as a pall of gloom hanging over Jamaica.

Mr. Holness, who was speaking at the funeral service of Glynese Bernard at the St. Luke's Church in Cross Roads, Kingston Saturday afternoon, <span style="font-weight: bold">told the congregation to have faith and look to a higher power for strength while still taking the necessary steps to protect themselves</span>.

&quot;We must also take greater responsibility for personal safety ... we must raise our level of consciousness, awareness about our environment and the people that surround us ... we must use our intelligence to conquer these threats that exist within our society,&quot; he said.

According to Mr. Holness, the Jamaican people can do this.

&quot;I feel that the education system is strong enough, has the right people, has the right resources to put in place the measures to make our school and public places safe,&quot; he said.

The body of 17-year old Glynese was found on the Dyke Road in Portmore St. Catherine early this month weeks after she was reported missing.

She had been stabbed several times in her neck and chest.

The Education Minister was also in attendance of the funeral service for 18-year old Pia Phillips, late Head Girl of the Immaculate Conception High School.

Pia was accidentally shot and killed by her father who was trying to protect her and other family members from gunmen.

10-yr old boy beaten by mob


A 10-year old boy is nursing multiple injuries after he was set upon by an angry mob in Ensom City, St. Catherine.

Residents claim the boy was caught in a house he broke into on Plover Road, Ensom City just after midday on Saturday.

A police officer who was dispatched to the scene told RJR News that upon his arrival <span style="font-weight: bold">he found the boy bound and lying on a sidewalk.</span>
He reportedly had multiple cuts and bruises all over his body.

The boy was taken to the Spanish Town Hospital and is to be placed in the care of the state.

Well I can't disagree with the bit about taking responsibility for personal safety BUT the state has an important role to play in protecting citizens especially young children. Golding said something about drawing a line in the sand where protecting children are concerned and I agree. Government needs to prioritize given its limited resources...if it means foregoing promises about free health care to do something about the security situation then so be it. If you can't protect the most vulnerable in society then government counts for naught. At the other end of the scale the fact that people (and it appears to be multiple persons) could think to carryout acts like these shows that in Jamaica, number of churches not withstanding, there is a serious moral lapse and/or we have lost our collective mind.
