Six months after the official handing over of a multi-million dollar dialysis centre to the Spanish Town Hospital in St. Catherine, the facility is yet to become operational.
However, this has come as no surprise as when the building was officially handed over, it was revealed that the dialysis machines were unable to function using the water at the hospital.
The building and machines, valued at $22-million, were donated by Spanish Town businessman Ernest Hoo, in memory of his mother who died of kidney failure several years ago at the hospital.
Mr. Hoo says he is disappointed that his donations are not being utilized.
"I cannot get an explanation as to the reason and I cannot think of a reason ... they keep telling me that the water is not purified enough and it has some kind of bacteria but I don't have anything to do with that and outside of that, I am positive that that must be a complaint that they can rectify in short order."
Mr. Hoo added that his attempts to contact Health Minister Ruddy Spencer for him to step in, has been unsuccessful.
When contacted the hospital's Chief Executive Officer David Coombs said efforts are being made to address the problem.
