This was on our news last night. I can just imagine how many of these callers actually get cussed out.

WASHINGTON - Thousands of people are getting unwelcome phone calls with debt collectors on the line. During these tough economic times, debt collectors are making harassing threats -- pay up or else.

It seems that no matter what the ring tone, the tone of voice on the other end is the same.

"I'll advise you that it's time to become mature," said one debt collector. "Act your age and not your shoe size, and let's get this taken care of."

"We do need to get this taken care of right away or we are going to be forced to send the sheriff...," said another. "You have a good day now."

While sick in the hospital, Karen Sweigard said she received repeated calls about her car payment. "She said I was a loser cause I couldn't pay my bills, and maybe I should just go ahead and die," said Sweigard of a debt collector who called her.

Agents even called her 17-year-old son in school and her 73-year-old mother, threatening to throw them both in jail. "That's got to be the most humiliating part, besides my son, is to have my 73-year-old mother call me crying because she's afraid she's gonna be put in jail," Sweigard said.

Sweigard's attorney, Sonya Smith-Valentine said, in these tough economic times, collectors are under extreme pressure. "Unfortunately, they've come to learn that by being aggressive, by being abusive, by being nasty, people tend to pay because they want the calls to stop," said Smith-Valentine.

In 2007, the Federal Trade Commission received almost 80,000 complaints about debt collectors violating the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, making up almost 21 percent of all consumer complaints.

Landover resident Michele Middleton also received harassing phone calls. Debt collectors threatened her that they were going to take everything she had.
Not excusing the phone calls, an attorney for both debt collectors and businesses said the economy is affecting his clients too. "They haven't been paid by other people other contractors and business people that have gone out of business and then they're left holding the bag for their debts," said Terry Ligum.

If consumers do get a harassing phone call, under the law, debt collectors cannot threaten to send police to arrest someone. Also, they may only call within the hours and with the phone numbers consumers have given them permission to call. Both Sweigard and Middleton have sued and their phone calls have stopped.

Me (inna di chinese accent) : xks Xantibury nuh liiii yah!"
Cap1 (confused): "sorry??? what?? May I speak to a <span style="font-style: italic">xKs Xantibury</span>?"
Me: (in a getting agitated chinese voice) " Meee....saay .... xKs Xantibury.... nuuuh..... liiii..... yah!"
Cap1: "Nuh live yah?... Ooooh! Ok.. Thanks."
Me: "Syianora!"
