Coalition may crush loonie

A left-of-centre coalition government, including the NDP in key cabinet posts, could have consequences for Alberta similar to the National Energy Program and shoot the loonie out of the sky, says a Calgary petroleum analyst.

&quot;This is as bad, if not worse, than when the Liberals introduced the National Energy Program,&quot; said Peter Linder, principal owner of DeltaOne Capital Partners.

&quot;This would be a catastrophe for the Canadian economy, for the Canadian dollar value, for Alberta.&quot;

<span style="font-weight: bold">The problem with a coalition government isn't so much that it rests largely on a weak Liberal Party of Canada, but it includes the New Democrats as a junior partner, Linder said. </span>

And in order to keep a shaky coalition that also includes the sovereigntists Bloc Quebecois intact, the Liberals will be forced to make concessions to a party that during the last election campaign proposed to repeal corporate tax cuts.

The NDP has since dropped that demand, but nonetheless, Linder said <span style="font-weight: bold">NDP participation could lead to a loss of confidence among the investment community not only in Canada but internationally, especially since the Canadian economy is still relatively strong and the country just had a federal election. </span>

&quot;<span style="font-weight: bold">This would create so much uncertainty that the rest of the world would look at Canada as, 'What they hell are they doing? Are they out of their minds?</span>', &quot; he said, noting Alberta's oilsands, already battered by sinking commodity prices and global market turmoil, could see investment dry up further.

The Canadian dollar would bear the brunt of a loss in confidence and plunge to US60 cents or even lower, Linder predicted.

The loonie currently trades near US80 cents, down from values near par with the greenback reached in fall 2007.

Former Liberal finance minister John Manley, in Calgary yesterday for a conference on taxation, also said the political showdown in Ottawa could seriously erode confidence in Canada.

&quot;I think it's important for our political leaders to find a way to build some confidence in Canada, in terms of investors, consumers and citizens,&quot; he told media after his presentation.

Opposition parties have faulted Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his minority Conservative government for not announcing a financial stimulus package.

Manley, however, said Harper and his government responded appropriately.

CRITICAL VOTE

The government could move to shut down, or prorogue, Parliament before Monday's critical vote and return in the new year. If it proceeds, the government could be toppled just weeks after the Conservatives won a strengthened mandate from the Canadian electorate, and the Liberals delivered the party's worst popular support showing since Confederation.

If the government goes down, the governor general must decide whether to approve the coalition, or to dissolve Parliament and trigger another election.

According to the opposition leaders, the move to defeat the government was prompted by the absence of an economic stimulus package in the fiscal update. But the trio was short on details of what their own plan would entail. Liberal MPs denied reports a $30-billion package was in the works.

During a rowdy and surreal session in the House of Commons earlier in the day, Liberal MPs gave Duceppe and Layton a standing ovation. Harper accused his rivals of trying to seize power and subvert democracy by working with the separatists.

He urged the parties to cease and desist until the government tables its budget Jan. 27, 2009, and warned of the dire consequences of Dion's gambit.

&quot;I think he is about to play the biggest political game in Canadian history,&quot; he said.

Real losers

Re: Proposed Opposition coalition. The last time I looked at my passport it said that I am a Canadian citizen.

Now we have three leaders (Stephane Dion, Jack Layton, and Gilles Duceppe) conspiring to bring down the rightfully-elected government. Stephane Dion had some of the worst ratings as a leader ever, and he wants to be prime minister? Gilles Duceppe leads a party that wants to separate from Canada, and Jack Layton and the NDP could never be the governing party of Canada.

We had an election, and you lost. Whether you like him or not, Stephen Harper is the rightfully-elected prime minister. If an election is called any candidate from the Liberals, NDP, or the Green party can stay away from my door. We are not a Banana Republic where anyone can seize power, we are Canadian.
