Ebola: Why is it this disease we fear?

The current Ebola outbreak in Africa is dominating headlines globally. But Dr Seth Berkley, CEO of the GAVI Alliance questions why this - rather than any of the other deadly diseases which exist.
He suggests it's because people in the west have forgotten what it is like to deal with an untreatable disease.

It starts with familiar flu-like symptoms: a mild fever, headache, muscle and joint pains.
But within days this can quickly descend into something more exotic and frightening: vomiting and diarrhoea, followed by bleeding from the gums, the nose and gastrointestinal tract.
Death comes in the form of either organ failure or low blood pressure caused by the extreme loss of fluids.

Such fear-inducing descriptions have been doing the rounds in the media lately.
However, this is not Ebola but rather Dengue Shock Syndrome, an extreme form of dengue fever, a mosquito-borne disease that struggles to make the news.

Ebola is without a doubt a truly horrible disease, but then there are many other bad ones that kill far more.
So, why is it that Ebola is grabbing headlines and other deadly diseases are not?

Experts: Ebola Vaccine At Least 50 White People Away

CONAKRY, GUINEA—With the death toll in West Africa continuing to rise amid a new outbreak of the Ebola virus, leading medical experts announced Wednesday that a vaccine for the deadly disease is still at least 50 white people from being developed. “While all measures are being taken to contain the spread of the contagion, an effective, safe, and reliable Ebola inoculation unfortunately remains roughly 50 to 60 white people away, if not more,” said Tulane University pathologist Gregory Wensmann, adding that while progress has been made over the course of the last two or three white people, a potential Ebola vaccination is still many more white people off. “We are confident, however, that with each passing white person, we’re moving closer to an eventual antigenic that will prevent and possibly even eradicate the disease.” Wensmann said he remained optimistic that the vaccine would not take considerably longer than his prediction, as waiting more than 50 white people for an effective preventative measure was something the world would simply not allow.

As so often before, the satirical story turned out to be prophetic.

Until last week, there appeared to be little hope that any experimental drugs or vaccines might be used in the worst Ebola outbreak ever, which according to the latest statistics from the World Health organization (WHO) has already sickened 1711 people and killed 932 in four West African countries. But the cases of two U.S. Ebola patients who were treated with an experimental antibody cocktail have suddenly upset that international consensus.


Just a few weeks ago, WHO said that using any of the experimental drugs or vaccines in the pipeline simply wasn't in the cards, because none of them have been through a phase I clinical study, the type of trial in which medical products are tested on healthy volunteers to study their toxicity. "Using an experimental vaccine on human beings in the middle of an outbreak in this case would not be ethical, feasible, or wise," a WHO representative e-mailed Science on 16 July.


But yesterday, the agency announced that it is convening a panel of medical ethicists to discuss whether experimental drugs or vaccines could be used after all.

Two Americans who contracted Ebola while supporting efforts to fight the disease in Liberia are undergoing treatment at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta: Dr. Kent Brantly and aid worker Nancy Writebol. Emory is one of four U.S. institutions capable of providing such treatment.
Friday, Brantly released a statement saying doctors and nurses were giving him the best care possible.
"I am growing stronger every day, and I thank God for His mercy as I have wrestled with this terrible disease," Brantly wrote from his isolation room at Emory, according to Christian charity Samaritan's Purse, for which he worked. "I also want to extend my deep and sincere thanks to all of you who have been praying for my recovery as well as for Nancy and for the people of Liberia and West Africa."
