US State Dept keeps HIM from Harlemites during his visit

These myths were problematic for African American communities excited by theupcoming tour. The African American press largely dismissed allegations thatEthiopians, particularly Haile Selassie, “do not consider themselves colored” and insteadsaw the emperor’s visit as the coming of a black leader.32 In the months preceding theemperor’s tour, African American newspapers regularly celebrated “the great andwelcome news for Afro-Americans” that an “African emperor [would] put foot onAmerican soil.”33
This is not to say that the African American press was completely happy with theorganization, or events, of the tour. A number of writers and community leaders quicklyvoiced their displeasure that the State Department held such tight control of HaileSelassie’s schedule while the black community was allowed no input. They wereparticularly skeptical about the emperor’s itinerary in relation to regional politics in theUnited States. Many writers were upset that the emperor would not be spending muchtime in the South. JET Magazine even ran an article that blatantly accused the StateDepartment of skipping the South for political reasons. According to their reporter’ssource inside the government, “the emperor’s boycott of the south” was “ostensibly an

44attempt to minimize embarrassment from racial discrimination.”34 Despite this “over-
sight” there was still plenty of excitement in the African American press about the tour,particularly about Haile Selassie’s scheduled visit to Harlem.
Thrilled that Haile Selassie would be visiting Harlem, many community leaderscleaned the street fronts, put up decorations, and generally prepared for the imperialvisit.35 However, this initial burst of excitement did not last. Many became frustrated andangry by the quick “snub” arranged between the State Department and the mayor of NewYork.36 Although over 300,000 Harlemites crowded the streets on 30 May 1954expecting to see the emperor, only a small portion caught a glimpse of fancy governmentcars, all with closed roofs. Furthermore Harlem’s African American community leaderswere outraged when Haile Selassie’s motorcade passed right by the Theresa Hotel, whichhad been specially decorated to receive the emperor. Willie Bryant, a jazz orchestraleader considered by many to be “the unofficial mayor of Harlem,” and a little girlholding a bouquet of orchids for the emperor’s granddaughter stood at a podium shockedas Haile Selassie “whizzed” past the crowd.37 While Haile Selassie did make a scheduledstop at the Abyssinian Baptist Church several blocks away, many felt hurt andembarrassed that the emperor’s caravan of close topped cars hardly slowed down for thehuge crowds of African American onlookers.
Seeking answers, and perhaps an apology, The National Newspaper PublishersAssociation (NNPA), also known as the Black Press of America, contacted the New York

45City Mayor’s Office and demanded to know why Haile Selassie had not been allowed to
stop at the Theresa Hotel or ride in an open top vehicle. Mary Gorman, the publicrelations director for the mayor’s reception committee, responded to the NNAP by sayingthat “the State Department simply refused to allow the Emperor to ride in an open carbecause of ‘security’ reasons.”38 Many commentators found this explanation ridiculousand insulting especially considering that the very next day Haile Selassie was paradedalong Broadway (through an Italian neighborhood) in an open top vehicle. James L.Hicks, an African American reporter allowed to travel in the motorcade with the emperornoted that “it was an insult... to imply that the Emperor might be harmed while ridingdown 125th St. [through Harlem] where 99 percent of his viewers would be colored, andthat he would not be harmed by the thousands of Italians” who saw the emperor in hisopen car on Broadway.39 The State Department never clarified the issue.


However upset the NNAP writers and citizens of Harlem were at Haile Selassie’sbrief semi-appearance, writers in the southern states were even more infuriated by theState Department’s complete avoidance of their communities. John H. McCray, writingfor The Afro American on behalf of southern states, responded to NNPA reporters bysaying that “even its [Harlem’s] glimpse of the ‘Lion of Judah’ gives Harlem a whoppingadvantage over the 11 million” African Americans “who live south of the Mason-Dixon.”McCray argued that the State Department’s “rank discrimination” demonstrated by“ducking around having visitors from other countries peak into the South” was a muchgreater insult and affected many African Americans. Instead of inspiring “three-fourths

Questioned by Bill McNeil: "there are millions of Christians throughout the world, your Imperial Majesty, who regard you as the reincarnation of Jesus Christ."

Selassie's answer: "I have heard of that idea. I also met certain Rastafarians. I told them clearly that I am a man, that I am mortal, and that I will be replaced by the oncoming generation, and that they should never make a mistake in assuming or pretending that a human being is emanated from a deity."

For starters:

He said, “I and the Father are one.” In fact, the Jews were ready to kill Him right there! Why? “Because you,” they said, “a mere man, claim to be God” (John 10:33).

On another occasion, He used the personal name of Israel’s God–the name revealed to Moses (Exodus 3:14)–to refer to Himself. And He even used the Torah for context, so no one would misunderstand Him: “Before Abraham was, I AM” (John 8:58).

This article is not an exhaustive list of Christ's claims to be God, but it does cover the major ones. I suggest you read this with a Bible open, as I have not posted all the scriptures listed.1. Mark 2:1-12--Jesus heals a paralytic. He had authority to forgive sins, which is something only God Himself can do. Then, to authenticate His claim, He demonstrated His power by healing the paralytic.2. The miracles Jesus performed are a very strong indication of His divinity (because no mere human can work actual miracles by his own power). Jesus referred to the miracles in John 10:24-39 as proof that he was telling the truth. This passage is Christ's own response to the unbelieving Jews' charge of blasphemy (dishonoring God by claiming to be God). Incidentally, this section also includes a beautiful promise that once you are saved/born again/become a Christian, you can never lose your salvation. Verses 28-29 say we will "never perish; no one can snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand. I and the Father are one." (Here is another strong statement that He is God.) We can have the assurance of eternal security because we didn't earn salvation in the first place; it is a free gift (Ephesians 2:8,9).3. During Christ's trial, the chief priests asked Him point blank, "Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God." And He said,

• "I am." (Mark 14:60-62)
• "Yes, it is as you say." (Matt. 26: 63-65)
• "You are right in saying I am." (Luke 22:67-70)

These are all ways of saying the same thing, written by different authors.In John's gospel, he recounts Jesus' interview with Pontius Pilate (John 18:33-37). Pilate wanted to know if He were the King of the Jews. Jesus then talked about how His kingdom was not of this world. Pilate said, "You are a king, then!" Jesus answered, "You are right in saying I am a king..." The truth is, he is King of the whole universe.4. Jesus says in John 10:11-18 that he is the Good Shepherd. When you read this passage along with Ezekiel 34:1-16, you can see that Jesus was identifying Himself with God, who pronounced Himself Shepherd over Israel. The Jewish people, being an agrarian and shepherding society, knew and dearly loved this section of the Old Testament because God was using a metaphor they lived every day. So when Jesus said, "I am the Good Shepherd," and that whole John passage so clearly parallels the Ezekiel passage, there was no doubt that He was claiming to be God.5. John 4:25-26. This is where the Samaritan woman, whom Jesus went to meet at the well, gets into a discussion of "living water" with Jesus. He pinpoints her sinful lifestyle (knowledge He would not have had as a mere human passerby), then He admits that He is the long-awaited Messiah: "I who speak to you am He."6. John 5:1-18. Jesus heals a lame man on the Sabbath, which the unbelieving Jews gave Him a hard time about. His answer was, "My Father is always at His work to this very day, and I too am working." It was a well-known Jewish line of thought that, although God rested on the seventh day after Creation week, He continued to "work" in being loving, compassionate, and just, as well as keeping the earth producing, keeping the sun moving, etc. In other words, although the creating had stopped, the maintenance went on--even on the Sabbath, and that was the only "work" allowed on that day. So Jesus is putting Himself on the same level as his Father in working on the Sabbath. And by calling God "My Father" (instead of "Our Father"), He was claiming an intimate relationship with God that far exceeded anyone else's. So in these two ways, He was making Himself equal with God.7. John 16:28. "I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father." What Christ is saying here is that he existed along with the Father before being born. He "entered the world" by wrapping Himself in human flesh and being born as a baby. He grew up, fulfilled His mission/ministry, was crucified and raised from the dead (all part of the "mission") and then left the world to go back to the Father in heaven, where He is now seated at the right hand of God (the place of honor). He is the only person who ever existed before conception. That Christ was in a "pre-incarnate state" means that He is God.
