Launtia Cuff, STAR Writer A Canadian-Jamaican national was on Tuesday, fined $700,000 for bribery or serve three months' imprisonment, when he appeared in the Santa Cruz Resident Magistrate's Court. Marcel Myers was charged under the Corruption Prevention Act after he made attempts to bribe a police constable earlier this year. Myers was stopped along the Longwood main road for exceeding the speed limit. Documents While conducting spot checks with another officer, the constable stopped Myers for travelling 73 kilometres per hour in a 50 kilometre zone. The officer asked for his documents, which Myers produced and informed the officer that he had placed something in it for him. Upon searching the documents, the officer discovered $2,000. The constable brought it to the attention of his senior officer and Myers was subsequently arrested and brought before the courts. Resident Magistrate Sonya Wint-Blair said the courts must send a strong message that corruption will not be tolerated.
